EP votes Wednesday on EU mandate in UK-EU trade talks |
|
The European Parliament, in its first meeting in Strasbourg without UK MEPs, on Wednesday will vote on a proposed mandate for the EU to negotiate a new partnership and trade relations with the United Kingdom. The UK left the EU on 31 January and has now entered an 11-month transition period. The first priority for the EU and the UK now is to negotiate a trade deal with the EU. The UK wants as much access as possible for its goods and services to the EU, including access to the EU single market for financial services. The EU could take weeks to agree a formal negotiating mandate as all the 27 member states and the European Parliament have to be in agreement. Heads of state and government of the EU27 are expected to discuss the mandate in their Brussels summit a week later, on 20 February. Read more |
