FT: Brussels plans central databases to boost capital markets

Brussels is planning to create US-style central databases that hold information on publicly listed companies and trading activity as part of a push to boost the integration of its capital markets. According to draft documents seen by the Financial Times (FT), the measures will include changes to make it easier for investors to access information on companies operating in the EU and for EU banks and fund managers to find prices of stocks and bonds throughout the single market. Reuters: Top bankers bemoan slow pace of European CMU

Reuters reports that two top bankers bemoaned the slow pace of unifying European capital markets, voicing concerns that European investment and innovation too often flee the continent for the US. BNP Paribas Chairman Jean Lemierre said European insurance companies are forced to seek out the U.S. for liquid investments where capital markets run deep, and that European startups often head across the Atlantic. According to Deutsche Bank Chief Executive Christian Sewing, the Capital Markets Union (CMU) "safeguards the competitiveness of the European economy". Read more


Bloomberg: UBS, Deutsche Bank set the course for next era with new Chairmen

Two of Europe’s banking giants picked the leaders who will chart their next era as they named successors for the chairmen who steered them through a decade of restructuring, Bloomberg reports. UBS Group nominated former Morgan Stanley President Colm Kelleher to succeed Axel Weber as Chairman. Deutsche Bank proposed Dutch insurance veteran Alexander Wynaendts for the same role, replacing Paul Achleitner. Read more

FBF: Borrower insurance: French banks support a model of solidarity and risk pooling

French banks massively and responsibly finance their clients' projects, and access to credit and borrower protection are major issues. Concerning loan insurance, the profession reiterates its constant objective to ensure protection and maintain a model of solidarity and risk pooling, unlike the bill brought by the AGIR group to the national assembly. The French Banking Federation (FBF) deplores the proposed changes while maintaining that the annual termination on a fixed date is beneficial. Read more (FR)

ECB: Commitment and persistence

Inflation is largely being pushed up by exceptional pandemic circumstances, says European Central Bank (ECB) President Lagarde at the European Banking Congress. Monetary policy must remain persistent to ensure that inflation returns to our 2% target on a sustained basis. Read more


ESMA: Verena Ross delivers a keynote speech at the DSW ESG Conference 2021

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) Chair Verena Ross reiterates that ambitious and targeted measures to address greenwashing will play an important role in the forthcoming ESMA activities in sustainable finance. The Authority intends to work closely with national securities regulators to promote a coordinated approach across the EU to tackling this issue. Read more


EIOPA: Annual occupational pensions statistics

The European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) published for the first time annual occupational pensions statistics for the reference year 2020. The annual statistics include statistics on the balance sheet, asset exposures, contributions, benefits & transfers, expenses, members, and basic information, including for example information on the structure of IORPs, number of schemes, and concentration ratios.
