New guideline for measuring formaldehyde releases and concentrations

We have published a guideline which explains how to measure formaldehyde releases from articles and its concentrations inside vehicles, following the requirements set out in Appendix 14 of the EU-wide restriction of formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers. The restriction starts applying in August 2026.

The guideline was prepared at the request of the European Commission.

Consultations on applications for authorisation

We have launched consultations on ten applications for authorisation covering ten uses of Chromium trioxide (EC 215-607-8):

  • for chrome plating of different parts and substrates in the sanitary, automotive, rubber, plastic, paper, hydraulic, pharmaceutical, automotive, food, and building sectors;
  • for etching and pre-treatment of parts used in the cosmetic, hydro-sanitary, and perfumery sectors; and
  • in primers and slurry coating operations in the aerospace and defence sectors.

More information about the uses applied for is available on our website. Have your say through an online webform until 9 July 2025.

Updated catalogue of borderline cases between articles and substances/mixtures

This catalogue contains borderline cases between articles and substances/mixtures assessed in accordance with the Guidance on requirements for substances in articles under the REACH Regulation. It helps the user to determine if an object is an article according to REACH.

The cases assessed are based on questions received by national helpdesks and ECHA.

New proposals to harmonise classification and labelling

Two proposals have been submitted for:

  • 2,4,6-tris(dimethylaminomethyl)phenol* (EC 202-013-9, CAS 90-72-2); and
  • 1H-benzotriazole [1] and its inorganic salts, with the exception of those specified elsewhere in this Annex (EC 202-394-1 [1], CAS 95-14-7 [1]).

*Due to a technical issue, the status indicated in the registry of classification and labelling (CLH) intentions still shows intention instead of submitted.

Contract research organisation days

Do you work for a contract research organisation performing ecotoxicological and environmental fate studies? Join our event on 21-22 October 2025 in Helsinki.

The aim is to discuss the learnings from our hazard assessment and to improve regulatory acceptance of experimental environmental studies. We also want to receive your feedback to understand the challenges that contract research organisations face when performing these studies.

Register by 15 August 2025 using the online form.
