ghosts unable
to cross water ghosts
unable to climb stairs
gravity a stooped ghost
who ferries us home

radar ghosts radio ghosts
sunlight ghostlight
moonlight ghostlight's ghost

pepper's burn ghost
cat's stare ghost
your dead brother
calls your name ghost
in the plane
you're a ghost
trailing behind you
the ghost of a ghost

imagine their number
no wonder we hear them

they feed on our faces
until we become them

a ghost reads this poem
to the ghosts of the poem
a mother ghost
a father ghost
hear the leaves rustle
that's a ghost's shuffle
from the book STAY / YesYes Books

The Mysteries of Translation

“Tang poet Li Bai wrote his poem 'Parting at Changgan' in the eighth century....How could a translator bridge such immense distances without confusing or burdening readers, while also honoring the original? Part of the joy—and the difficulty—of translating Li Bai is creating access to otherwise potentially impossible (sometimes even to us, the translators) ideas, lines, and references.”

What Sparks Poetry:
Tracy Zeman on Susan Howe's "The Nonconformist's Memorial"

Howe’s techniques create an altered world that a reader can step into and attempt to decipher. In the act of reading, we enter into the act of making. I loved the mystery in that process and the reader-work involved as we participate in the unraveling of established histories and the un-silencing that results....She both implicates the existing narrative and reconfigures it to create space for others."
