Blue Door Café named best restaurant in Northern Ohio

After much ado about the loss of a high-profile chef and some kitchen staff in June, the Blue Door Café and Bakery, 1970 State Road in Cuyahoga Falls, has shown its mettle. It not only survived the challenge of rebuilding a kitchen staff after a much-publicized battle, but the restaurant thrived. This week the little restaurant that could won the Best Restaurant in Northern Ohio title from the Ohio Restaurant Association. READ MORE

Bernie Kosar’s Wood-Fired Grill out at MGM Northfield, replaced by Valley’s Edge Steak & Seafood

Legendary Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar’s name has been taken off the upscale restaurant at MGM Northfield Park. After 10 years in the racino, Kosar’s Wood-Fired Grill has been reimagined and rebranded as Valley’s Edge Steak & Seafood. Named after its proximity to the Cuyahoga Valley, the restaurant is closest to the casino’s north entrance. Cleveland.com’s Paris Wolfe has the story. READ MORE

A refreshed Nighttown set to open this month (photos)

It’s taken a few years, a lot of TLC, a vision to look to the future and a respect for the past, but Nighttown is back.

The restaurant, which opened in Cleveland Heights in 1965, is set to open on Friday, Nov. 10. The team behind Red, the Steakhouse owns the venerable spot in Cleveland Heights. Brendan Ring, who owned the restaurant for two decades, closed it in 2020, a casualty of the coronavirus pandemic. Cleveland.com’s Marc Bona has a sneak peek, with photos from Judie Veigh. New York brewery run by Clevelanders adds NE Ohio distribution

42 North Brewing Co., a Buffalo-area brewery owned by Clevelanders, is now being distributed in Northeast Ohio. It is the first distribution outside of New York for the brewery, founded John and Cathy Cimperman in 2015. It resembles a campus that includes a barrel room, garden and an airbnb in East Aurora, about 20 miles southeast of downtown Buffalo. Through its northeast Ohio distributor, R.L. Lipton, the brewery’s flagship Borderland IPA and a seasonal line starting with Oatmeal Cookie Brown Ale will be distributed locally. READ MORE

Tartine Bistro, Watershed Distillery team up for bourbon tasting/dinner

Northeast Ohio bourbon nerds can try Watershed Distillery’s portfolio of rare bourbons this month at Tartine Bistro in Rocky River. The Bistro will serve five different bourbons – three of them rare--at its Nov. 17 Limited-Release Watershed Bourbon Dinner. All will be served in one-ounce pours and paired with artisan dishes created by Chef David Birge. READ MORE

 

Rozi’s Wine House schedules wine and cheese fundraiser

Rozi’s Wine House,14900 Detroit Ave., Lakewood, is holding a wine and cheese fundraiser for the Barton Senior Center on Saturday, Nov. 11. The casual-attire event is 6 to 9 p.m. and will benefit the wine shop’s non-profit neighbor down the street in Lakewood. It includes tasting by the glass, heavy hors d’oeuvres, music, raffle baskets, wine and spirits pull and cash bar. Ten percent of any beer and wine purchased during the event will go to the center. Game dinners offer chance to eat turtle, kangaroo and more

Wild and farm-raised game are landing on tables beyond hunters and their families. As the weather cools, these hardy cuts of meat are popping up in local restaurants. For example, Amba in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood sold out two game dinners within an hour of announcement. Amba’s November dinners pair wine with small plates that feature game. Meanwhile, Serenite Restaurant and Culinary Institute in Medina has created a wild game menu for November. The kitchen will serve turtle soup all month. They are reaching further afield for some of the protein centerpieces. Kangaroo, camel, and bison will each take a turn on the lunch and dinner menus. READ MORE

 

Turkey Trot progressive dining-sipping event is scheduled

The Grand River Valley wine region’s 15th annual Turkey Trot runs through Nov. 22. The progressive food and wine tasting event includes these Northeast Ohio wineries offering samples paired with Thanksgiving-inspired appetizers: Debonné Vineyards, 7840 Doty Road, Madison; Ferrante Winery & Ristorante, 5585 N. River Road W, Geneva; Grand River Cellars Winery & Restaurant, 5750 S. Madison Road, Madison; Laurello Vineyards, 4573 Ohio 307, Geneva; Cask 307 Winery, 7259 Warner Road, Madison. The Aviator sets 5-course Bourbon tasting

Schnitz Ale Brewery

Schnitz Ale Brewery, 5729 Pearl Road, Parma, -- the only brewery in Parma -- celebrates its second birthday this month. A variety of beers are brewed onsite including IPAs, Kolsch, stout, porter and Schwarzbier. These pair perfectly with traditional German dishes like pork or chicken schnitzel, a sausage platter, Black Forest duck or Schupfnudeln (a German version of gnocchi).
