Cut out the malignant relationships, immediately.
Leave the stagnant business group you joined years ago.
Pull your kid off the sports team where the coach is constantly screaming and the parents passively accept his behavior.
Stop having dinner with the couple who constantly bicker.
Replace those relationships with better ones.
It's not difficult, but it requires effort.
When we were in school we had to continuously improve to advance. If you didn't grow, you would not move from one grade to the next.
As adults, we forget this.
But social growth, throughout life, is just as important. It's how we gain intellectual stimulation. It is how we become inspired.
Change your crowd and you change your life.
Here is your action item for today:
Keep a list of each of the people with whom you interact during the next month. Each time you come into contact with someone put either a "plus" or a "minus" symbol next to the person's name on the list. At the end of the month, review your list. Cut out anyone who has more than one "minus" next to his/her name.
Do the same thing with groups. When you go to a meeting, make a mark denoting how you feel as you leave. Withdraw from any group that has more than one "minus."
(You really don't need to wait a month. You'll know right away but, having a specific "to do" will get you started).
There are no neutral relationships and there are no neutral interactions. Either you feel good about your interaction or you don't.
It's like sex. If you cannot decide if it was good, it wasn't.
This is the most important thing you can do to influence your growth - whether you are fifteen or fifty-five.
The people around you are holding you back.
Eject the losers, jerks, and negative people from your life and replace them.
You deserve better.
