 By KELLY P. KISSEL | Metro editor There's still no decision from the East Baton Rouge Metro Council on what to do about the number of homeless camps that have popped up on public property. There are some who want to ban the camps, but others who say that a camping ban would just lead to other problems inside the city and parish. Most of the people who spoke at a Wednesday night meeting were against the ban, but there won't be a vote until next month. Maybe.
A handful of Metro Council members say it may be time to make changes to the board that runs the region's bus service. There was a moment this week when the CATS leaders were poised to have two people on the staff drawing down a CEO-level salary. Some on the Metro Council question where that'd be a wise use of taxpayer money.
And the U.S. Supreme Court has struck down a New York state law that said people who want to carry a gun in public needed to demonstrate a valid reason. Justices had said in 2008 and 2010 that people could keep guns in their homes for self-defense. Today's ruling says the right isn't restricted just to homes.
