Division of Endocrinology Ranked 29th in the Nation

The Division of Endocrinology at Lurie Children’s recently was ranked 29th in the nation by U.S.News & World Report. The division, led by Donald Zimmerman, MD, includes specialized programs to treat diabetes, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Turner syndrome, growth problems, pituitary disorders, pubertal development problems, thyroid cancer and thyroid disorders. Our experienced, multidisciplinary team includes board-certified endocrinologists, pediatric nurse practitioners, registered nurses, certified diabetes educators, a dietitian, a social worker and a clinical psychologist.

Turner Syndrome Program

The Turner Syndrome Program at Lurie Children’s is a partnership between specialists with clinical and research expertise in the area of Turner syndrome. The integrated team provides high-quality care to pediatric patients with Turner syndrome, comprehensively treating the patient instead of addressing each symptom or issue separately. The team offers regularly-scheduled clinics each month for families to see multiple providers on the same day, including endocrinologists, cardiologists and otolaryngologists. Additionally, the program offers support services for parents, educational services and materials, and assistance with the transition to adult care for adolescents and young adults.

Gender & Sex Development Program

The Gender and Sex Development Program cares for children in two multidisciplinary settings. The Gender Development Program includes specialists from endocrinology, adolescent medicine, psychology and psychiatry to care for children with gender non-conformity. The Sex Development Program specializes in caring for disorders of sex development, such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia. The program brings together multiple specialists from endocrinology, urology, pediatric surgery, psychology, ethics and psychiatry to allow patients to see all of their doctors on the same day. This approach creates a collaborative environment for care and treatment. Courtney Finlayson, MD, is the program’s dedicated endocrinologist, allowing for specialized endocrinology treatment and consistent care.

Thyroid Cancer Treatment

The division is a regional referral center for pediatric thyroid cancer. Our pediatric endocrinologists are specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of papillary, follicular and medullary thyroid cancers. In-house expertise differentiates the program. Diagnostic radiologists provide state-of-the-art imaging procedures and interventional radiologists have specific expertise in performing aspiration biopsies of thyroid nodules. Onsite thyroid surgeons are available if surgery is recommended. Our team has extensive experience with thyroid hormone treatment and radioactive iodine therapy.
