LIGHT EVERY MOMENT
This October New Jersey's Clean Energy Program celebrates "Energy Awareness Month" and partners with ENERGY STAR® to support our commitment to reduce energy usage for all ratepayers in New Jersey. ENERGY STAR, a national program administered by the U.S. Department of Energy in conjunction with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, challenges the traditional approach to home improvement. From high-performing appliances and lighting, ENERGY STAR certified products are a solution for homeowners who wish to lower their energy usage. Before we have to "fall back," for daylight savings time, take a look around at the lighting sources you have in your house. With shorter days of sunlight, having sufficient light output will help you manage with the extended periods of darkness. For every moment that requires light, consider using an LED and compare the difference in light omitted by an LED vs. an incandescent vs. a CFL (the swirly ones). You will notice that LED's appear brighter but in reality provide the same brightness (lumens) using 70%-90% less energy than other types. As lighting technology improves, so do the variety of shapes and sizes available to fit your needs. Throughout the month of October, as a partner of ENERGY STAR, New Jersey's Clean Energy Program proudly campaigns to promote the use of energy-efficient lighting, LED light bulbs. As a follower on our Facebook page, you'll be able to make informed decisions with the information we share in support of the ENERGY STAR campaign #LightTheMoment. | NO HOCUS POCUS Today almost every consumer appliance and electronic device requires a cord and a power outlet. Unfortunately, many of these devices are energy-guzzlers even when your devices are not on. Even when powered off or in idle mode, they continue to draw electricity from the power source in order to maintain a network connection. This occurrence is called "standby power or vampire power." Consider the number of electronic products left plugged in when not in use. If you own a smart thermostat, review your utility bill to see how much electricity you consume during hours of low activity in your house. You will find that a significant amount of power is being consumed while no one is home. It is estimated that $11 billion in annual energy costs results from the "standby power" we all experience. By simply unplugging unused electronics or connecting the devices to an advanced power strip you can experience as much as a 10 percent decrease on your electricity bill. Learn more about the options you have to curb the vampires from sucking more of your energy. If you're shopping for new appliances or equipment, check for the ENERGY STAR logo, as they can save you more money up front and for years to come and don't forget about the incentives from New Jersey's Clean Energy Program. |
NO-COST ASSISTANCE PROVIDED TO REDUCE ENERGY USE
New Jersey's income-qualified residents can receive assistance at no cost to help make their homes more energy efficient, and provide a safe, healthy environment to raise their families. If you would like to lower your gas and electric bills by learning more about energy efficiency, the Comfort Partners Program can help! Benefits are determined on a home-specific basis and may include: Installation of efficient lighting, thermostats, hot water conservation measures, insulation upgrades, duct sealing and repair, heating/cooling equipment maintenance, replacement of inefficient refrigerators, and other measures. Education about home maintenance issues that may reduce the risk of fire, mold, moisture and other potential hazards. |
APPLIANCE ELIGIBILITY EXPANDED
In our efforts to innovate and create more savings for ratepayers, New Jersey's Clean Energy Program continues to link savings to consumer purchases. When scheduling a pickup of your old refrigerator or freezer, you will now be able to also recycle your room air conditioner or dehumidifier. For each qualifying refrigerator or freezer you will receive $50, and each room air conditioner or dehumidifier will receive $25. And, the pickup is FREE! You'll be glad to know that approximately 95% of each appliance is recycled! Learn more. |
