| Are you getting ready for the big day?! On 18 May it is European Cancer Nursing Day. This is a very special event when cancer nurses across Europe come together in a virtual campaign to highlight the issues facing the profession and inspire and support each other in their important work caring for cancer patients. In this issue of the newsletter, you can find about how you, your colleagues and your national cancer society, can get involved. This edition also invites you to play an active role in EONS15 and submit an abstract (a brief summary of a research paper or project you’d like to tell the cancer nursing community about) at our conference in Paris this September. The call to register is now open too. Make sure you sign up and secure your place at the major cancer nursing conference of the year. There’s also a request for you to take part in a survey that will help EONS update the Cancer Nursing Education Framework ready for the launch of a new edition at EONS15. Your views and experience will be much appreciated. There are lots of other items to help you expand your knowledge and take part in EONS’ activities as well. Happy reading! |

SUPPORTING CANCER NURSES IN CARING FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR PATIENTS |
---|
| During the pandemic, existing issues related to burnout, stress and resilience have increased, resulting in many leaving the profession. The ECND22 campaign focuses on the importance of self-care and wellbeing for cancer nurses, on occupational health and on retention and recruitment – all of which impact the quality of patient care. A powerful social media campaign to highlight these issues will take place in the lead-up to European Cancer Nursing Day on 18 May. The hashtag is #ECND22Go4SelfCare. We are calling on cancer nurses everywhere to participate by sharing our posts, and creating your own as well. Sign up and follow all EONS social media platforms, but especially EONS Twitter. A toolkit of ECND22 banners and posters displaying the key messages is now available on the ECND22 web page to help you, your colleagues and your cancer nursing society get involved. The EONS Board and Working Groups will be meeting in Zagreb, Croatia, to mark the day and make plans for the future. They will share pictures and updates with you from there across social media. So, get ready to play an active part – organise an event or gathering for ECND22 where you work and share your pictures and messages on 18 May, again using the hashtag #ECND22Go4SelfCare. Join with your colleagues to make maximum impact! (To get inspiration you could take a look at some of last year’s activities and photos.) ECND22 Competition |

| Sexuality in cancer patients is negatively affected by many factors both physical and psychosocial. Patients require specific care to overcome the physical and emotional sexual problems resulting from cancer and its treatments. In order to ensure better care, cancer nurses must learn about and address sexual issues. Education is the key to ensuring adequate guidance and advice is given to cancer patients and that this highly unmet need of sexuality and cancer is addressed. Read the full blog |

EONS TAKES THE TEMPERATURE OF CANCER NURSING ACROSS EUROPE |
---|
| In 2020, EONS collected data on the current status and development of cancer nursing from more than 650 nurses in 42 European countries. The analysed data were presented as the European Cancer Nursing Index 2020©, and described both the overall situation and also important differences between countries. This Index was presented at various meetings and congresses and also used to successfully advocate for better education, safety and recognition for cancer nursing in Europe – find out more here. To measure development and progress, EONS now plan an update, the European Cancer nursing Index 2022©. On International Nurses Day 2022 (May 12), EONS will invite cancer nurses across Europe to respond to an online survey, covering similar areas as the previous version of the Index. However, in this revision, we will focus more on each respondent’s workplace, in order to better highlight regional differences. We have also added questions related to the Covid-19 pandemic and its consequences for cancer nursing, as well as questions on staffing levels. The survey will be available in 16 languages. We hope you will join us in continuing to improving cancer care by responding to this survey. Stay tuned for more information at www.cancernurse.eu |

EONS STANDS WITH THE PEOPLE AND ONCOLOGY COMMUNITY OF UKRAINE |
---|
| The European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) is following developments in Ukraine with great sadness. Our mission is to ensure that all people affected by cancer benefit from equal, safe and high quality care. This brutal act of war is endangering all people in Ukraine – including the oncology workforce who, with other healthcare colleagues, are working under unbearable pressure. EONS stands firmly against all forms of violence and is hoping that this appalling situation, and its far-reaching consequences, can be defused for the sake of all innocent parties caught up in it. We encourage people to back European and International organisations in their support of the people of Ukraine. EONS will try its best to find ways to reach out to the oncology workforce and people affected by cancer and help in capacity building where possible. War only brings loss, sadness and inhumane suffering and we truly hope for a peaceful resolution. Our thoughts are with all the people of Ukraine. |

PREGNANCY FOR CHILDHOOD CANCER SURVIVORS – NEW STUDY |
---|
| Survivors of childhood cancer who became pregnant in adulthood are as likely to have healthy babies as those without a history of cancer, according to a new study. Their children also didn’t have higher risks of birth defects or other health problems at birth. However, the study does suggest that these women face other pregnancy risks that may warrant more intensive obstetric care. For example, women who had been treated for cancer as children had higher risks of several severe complications during pregnancy, delivery, and the period after delivery. Find out more |
