| | A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM EONS PRESIDENT JOHAN DE MUNTER | |
| |
| |
---|
| As festive decorations and coloured lights start to adorn houses and streets, we are met with a sense of satisfaction at the prospect of closing the year 2022. At EONS, it is with gratitude and pride that we reflect on all the great activities of the past year. Twelve months of dedication have brought us all closer to realizing EONS’ vision for cancer nursing across the European continent and beyond. None of these achievements would have been possible without the day-to-day enthusiasm and hard work of the EONS team, board members, working group chairs and members. Thank you for the dedication, positive spirit, and remarkable teamwork you have all displayed. I would also like to extend a heartfelt word of appreciation to EONS’ most precious resource – our EONS individual and society members. Thank you all for your exceptional contribution: you enabled us to grow and sustain our mission to ensure that all people affected by cancer benefit from the care of highly educated, well-informed and competent cancer nurses. I’d also like to say a big thank you to all our partner societies and stakeholders for choosing EONS as a valued partner. EONS will close 2022 reflecting on many highlights, such as ECND2022, the European College of Cancer Nursing, the EU Interact project, the PrEvCan project, the Nightingale Challenge, the Masterclass, and, last but not least, EONS15 in Paris. Our annual conference attracted more than 250 participants and 30 high-level speakers. This flagship EONS event also saw awards presented to several outstanding cancer nurses. As we prepare to greet a new year, we can assure you that close connection with and support of our membership, including recognition of the vital work that cancer nurses do, remain at the centre of EONS’ operations; and where we fall short and need to improve, we would like to hear from you. We look forward to building together on the successes of the last year as we prepare to enter 2023. Now the time has come to slow the pace and enjoy each other’s company over the Christmas break. I warmly wish you all a fantastic time spent in the company of family, close friends, and all your loved ones. May 2023 bring you warmth, love, health, massive opportunities, great success, and boundless personal growth and prosperity. Merry Christmas and happy new year! Watch the video! | |

| The latest YCN blog mirrors the theme of this month’s EONS cancer prevention campaign, PrEvCan, – Take Action to be a Healthy Body Weight. The link between obesity and cancer is complex; however, there is strong evidence that being above a healthy weight is a risk factor for some cancers. Excess body fat (especially toxic or visceral fat around the waist and vital organs) leads to more chemicals and hormones being released. It may also lead to inflammation. The blog will give you lots of tips on how to approach this important factor for health and cancer prevention. Read the YCN blog | |

| | | RCC4Nurses: IMPROVING QUALITY OF NURSING CARE IN METASTIC RENAL CELL CARCINOMA | |
| |
---|
| |
| EONS is a proud collaborating partner in a new project titled “RCC4Nurses: Improving quality of nursing care in metastatic renal cell carcinoma” (or “RCC4Nurses”) led by Dr Grigorios Kotronoulas, University of Glasgow, UK. It is funded by Pfizer and run from October 2022 – July, 2024. The aim of the RCC4Nurses project is to develop, deliver and evaluate an evidence-based, fit-for-practice, concise and scalable online educational programme for nurses on ‘advanced patient monitoring’ in the context of advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in Europe. The project will align development of the educational programme with current requirements in this area of practice to enable uptake by individual nurses and training institutions across Europe. The project’s goal is to fill the gap in clinical practice by making education in RCC accessible to all nurses across Europe. EONS’ role is to provide project management and communication/dissemination support. Help inform the educational programme development by taking part in the Delphi study Note: the 1st round is open until December 24, 2022 Find out more | |

| | EONS STANDS WITH THE PEOPLE AND ONCOLOGY COMMUNITY OF UKRAINE | |
| |
---|
| The European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) is following developments in Ukraine with great sadness. Our mission is to ensure that all people affected by cancer benefit from equal, safe and high quality care. This brutal act of war is endangering all people in Ukraine – including the oncology workforce who, with other healthcare colleagues, are working under unbearable pressure. EONS stands firmly against all forms of violence and is hoping that this appalling situation, and its far-reaching consequences, can be defused for the sake of all innocent parties caught up in it. We encourage people to back European and International organisations in their support of the people of Ukraine. EONS will try its best to find ways to reach out to the oncology workforce and people affected by cancer and help in capacity building where possible. War only brings loss, sadness and inhumane suffering and we truly hope for a peaceful resolution. Our thoughts are with all the people of Ukraine. | |

| Aerobic exercise can reduce the risk of developing metastatic cancer by 73%. A report in Cancer Research (November 15) details how high-intensity aerobic exercise increases glucose consumption by internal organs, thereby reducing the energy available for tumours to spread. | |
| | ALCOHOL INDUSTRY ACCESS IN EU ‘ALARMING’ | |
| | | A new report, published by IOGT-NTO and Movendi International, maps and describes the alcohol industry in the EU. It concludes that Big Alcohol operates a large lobby apparatus in the EU institutions with the aim to affect EU policy. The results show that the alcohol industry has met with the EU Commission 270 times between 2014 – 2022, compared to 14 meetings for civil society. Emil Juslin, European Policy Officer at IOGT-NTO says: “The results are alarming, but expected. The alcohol industry is still getting uncritically invited to consult on public health policy despite the fact that they have an inherent conflict of interest since they profit on a product that causes considerable harm to the citizens of Europe.” The report further describes and discusses the practices of the alcohol industry in EU policy. It describes an industry that takes every opportunity to dilute health messages as well as undermine or stall progress on effective health policy | |
| | WHOLEGRAIN-RICH DIET CAN SUPPORT HEALTH AND HEALTH SYSTEMS | |
---|
| Whole grains are any type of grain that has not been refined and instead retains and includes the entire kernel. These types of grains are more nutrient-dense than refined grains and evidence points to their health benefits, helping to lower the risk of major non-communicable diseases such as cancer and in turn reducing the burden on healthcare systems – but their uptake across the EU remains low. The EU’s flagship food policy, the Farm to Fork strategy, highlights that while consumption of red meat, sugars, salt and fats continues to exceed recommendations, consumption of whole-grain cereals is ‘insufficient’.
