| ECND23 – A EUROPE-WIDE CELEBRATION OF CANCER NURSING |

|---|
|
| On Thursday 18 May, thousands of cancer nurses across Europe celebrated European Cancer Nursing Day (ECND23). Our theme this year was ‘Driving Innovation in Cancer Care’ and highlighted the many ways that cancer nurses are adopting new approaches to make a positive difference both to patients, and to their own working lives. The day was a huge success and a dynamic social media campaign at #ECND23Go4Innovation shone a light on cancer nurses in their workplaces as they posted pictures and videos to mark the day. The EONS Board and Working Groups met face-to-face for a special celebratory event in Edinburgh with the UK Oncology Nursing Society (pictured). The morning featured a range of high-profile speakers. Among the highlights was a special video message to cancer nurses from European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides in which she paid tribute to the fantastic work that cancer nurses do every day. | CONGRATULATIONS TO THE ECND23 JOINT COMPETITION WINNERS! |
|
|
|

|
| This year’s ECND23 competition entrants were invited to show, in a short movie or photo montage, how they and/or their team are innovating in their workplace. Innovation could mean a new idea, a new method of working, a new technology or a new way of public or patient involvement. Congratulations to our joint winners, who will attend our EONS16 conference!
ESRA IBEK and her team from Bursa Uludağ University Medical Faculty Hospital Health Application and Research Center, in Turkey, won for their video ‘Distraction-Based Interventions During İmplanted Venous Port Catheter Needle Insertion: A Virtual Reality Application’. Through virtual reality glasses, patients watch three-dimensional video nature images, accompanied by music during the needle insertion of the implanted venous port catheter. Esra said: “This notably increased the comfort level and satisfaction of the patients and changed their perception of time, making it go more quickly.”
Watch the video MIRIAM HERNANDEZ BAILON and the team at The Supportive Care Department at Clinique de Genolier, Switzerland, won for a video on their innovative workshops. Miriam explained: “All through the year we use different techniques of relaxation, beauty workshops, fencing, cooking workshops and walks in the forest with the help and suggestions of our physiotherapist and occupational therapist (among others). All these complementary therapies alleviate patients’ and families’ physical and psychological pain and suffering.”

The winners will receive free registration to attend the EONS16 conference in Madrid, 21-23 October 2023. The ECND23 Task Group thanks all the other entrants for their contributions. The standard was high this year and all should be proud of their work.

| EONS RESEARCH PROPOSAL WORKSHOP BUILDS CONFIDENCE |
|

|
| The 8th EONS Research Proposal Workshop took place at the University of Barcelona campus of Bellvitge, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Barcelona, from 31 May to 2 June.
This event was specifically designed for oncology nurses with an interest in and aptitude for research who would like to develop their confidence and skills in writing a research proposal to address a contemporary clinical issue in cancer care. A comprehensive programme of interactive taught sessions, participant presentations, small group work and structured feedback discussions help nurses to build the confidence and skills they need to put together a proposal for their research project, which can then be used to apply for funding. Participating nurses were asked to identify a mentor who will provide ongoing advice and support to develop the full proposal. Feedback on the workshop was extremely positive.

| PREVCAN – TAKE ACTION TO REDUCE HIGH RADON LEVELS |

In June, the PrEvCan campaign focuses on radon. Radon is a natural radioactive gas that may cause radiation exposure in the home and it is important to check whether you are exposed. A free webinar, ‘Radon and cancer risk. What the cancer workforce needs to know’ took place on 1 June, focused on the important but little understood subject of radon and cancer, and featured subject expert Joachim Schüz, Branch Head of Environment and Lifestyle Epidemiology at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (WHO). • Ionising radiation has been shown to be carcinogenic and everyone is exposed to a range of natural and man-made sources. • Radon is the single biggest source of ionising radiation exposure for most people, with most exposure occurring in the home. • Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking, with long-term exposure shown to result in excess lung cancers. *You can also read a new article in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health entitled ‘Cancer Prevention Literacy among Different PopulationSubgroups: Challenges and Enabling Factors for Adopting and Complying with Cancer Prevention Recommendations’. This is split into two parts. | READ THE LATEST YCN BLOG – RADIATION RISKS AND BENEFITS |
|
|
|

| This month’s blog, linked to the PrEvCan campaign theme, tells us that radiation is the emission of energy as electromagnetic waves or moving subatomic particles. Natural radiation is produced by a variety of naturally occurring radioactive elements present in soil, water, air, and the human body. Every day, we are naturally exposed to a small amount of ionising radiation. Radon gas from the earth is often the most common source, however, there are other man-made sources that make up a tiny part of it. This type of ionising radiation (high energy radiation) can be the cause of cancer if a person is exposed to a lot of it. Radiation can affect our cells and damage our DNA, in some instances this is a useful tool in treating and diagnosing cancer; chest x-rays, computed tomography (CT) scans, positron emission tomography (PET) scans, and radiation therapy can all induce cell damage. The risks of cancer from these medical procedures are very low, and the benefits almost always outweigh the risks.

| INTEGRATED NUTRITION CANCER CARE – POLICY BRIEF |
|

|
| The EU4Nutrition stakeholder group, in which EONS was invited to participate, has published its policy brief ‘Integrated Nutrition Cancer Care’ that will be actively brought to the attention of health policymakers across Europe, ensuring that its important findings and recommendations reach key decision-makers in the field. Deriving from an initiative of the European Commission to promote discussions about public health issues, the group recently published the scientific article Nutrition care is an integral part of patient-centred medical care: a European consensus, that stresses the need to listen to patient voices with regards to nutrition and formulate actions to secure integrated nutrition care to all patients with cancer. The policy brief, based on the key insights of the article, highlights the crucial role that nutrition management plays in the cancer care continuum, emphasising its impact on clinical outcomes, quality of life, survivorship, and treatment costs.

EONS GENERAL MEETING – MONDAY 19 JUNE, ONLINE |

| The EONS General Meeting took place as an online meeting on Monday 19 June from 18.00-20.00 CET. Our full members (EONS National Oncology Nursing Societies/EONS individual members) were invited to attend. During the meeting, the participants approved the EONS election results and the 2022 audited accounts. Draft minutes will be available on the EONS website in due course as well as the presentations from the meeting. Virpi Sulosaari (pictured) is now formally in place as EONS President and Johan de Munter becomes Past-President. EONS welcomes and congratulates Virpi and thanks Johan for his outstanding commitment and invaluable contribution as President. Welcome too, to our new Board member Gülcan Bağçivan (Turkey). We also say goodbye to EONS Treasurer Wendy Oldenmenger and Board Member Andreas Charalambous and thank them sincerely for their service.

| EONS16 – APPLY FOR CNF BURSARY TO ATTEND THE CONFERENCE |

| The Cancer Nursing Fund is offering a bursary scheme for 20 cancer nurses to attend EONS16. Cancer nurses can apply for a grant of up to 500 euros towards registration fees, travel and/or accommodation for a maximum of 2 nights. The funding will be provided AFTER the EONS16 event. Applicants must meet the terms and conditionsand write a motivation letter of 250-500 words explaining their motivation to attend EONS16 and how this will help them in their work. Please, also make clear in which country you work and the nature of your work as a cancer nurse. Deadline: Applications are to be submitted with supporting documents to Hamyl Ali at working.groups@cancernurse.eu by 5pm CET on 30 June 2023. Successful applicants will be informed so that they can proceed with their traveling arrangements. All applicants will be duly informed on the outcome of the selection by end of 20 July 2023.

| EONS ACCREDITATION OF SAFE WORKPLACE – APPLY |

| It is EONS’ goal to promote safer and inspiring workplaces for patients and nurses throughout Europe. Following the ReCAN campaign and the European Cancer Nursing Index, that sought to promote cancer nursing awareness and understanding of occupational and patient safety, EONS has designed an accreditation tool. This EONS accreditation tool will reward the workplaces that implement, or have already implemented, measures that contribute to safe working environments, that ensures the best nursing care practices and the quality of cancer nursing care. The EONS Accreditation of Safe Workplace is a voluntary process, through which managers who wish to apply for it for their services and their nurses, fill out a questionnaire. The accredited workplace will be recognised by EONS and all other stakeholders and nurses across Europe. The domains analysed are: Safe environment and general policyEducationSafe workplaces & worker protectionPatient careManaging hazardous drugsManaging radiationThis process has a renewal period of 4 years and all departments caring for cancer patients can apply. | EONS EARLY CAREER RESEARCH GRANT 2023 – APPLY NOW |

| Up to €2500
The aim of this grant is to support early career cancer nurses in developing or conducting a research project within their field of practice. The grant must be used to cover direct research costs, e.g., patient and public involvement, software licences, methodological courses, costs for data collection and analysis. (The grant will not fund tuition, publication fees, conferences or salary.) Applicants must be an early career cancer nurse, with less than ten years of clinical experience in oncology. Proposals submitted by nurses who work in clinical settings will be prioritised.

| The European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) is following developments in Ukraine with great sadness. Our mission is to ensure that all people affected by cancer benefit from equal, safe and high quality care. This brutal act of war is endangering all people in Ukraine – including the oncology workforce who, with other healthcare colleagues, are working under unbearable pressure. EONS stands firmly against all forms of violence and is hoping that this appalling situation, and its far-reaching consequences, can be defused for the sake of all innocent parties caught up in it. We encourage people to back European and International organisations in their support of the people of Ukraine. EONS will try its best to find ways to reach out to the oncology workforce and people affected by cancer and help in capacity building where possible. War only brings loss, sadness and inhumane suffering and we truly hope for a peaceful resolution. Our thoughts are with all the people of Ukraine. |

| The University of Turku, Finland, has found that folate-based radiopharmaceuticals can be used in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging to detect folate receptors in brain tumours. The discovery of folate receptors and their exploitation potential with respect to brain tumours is a new and significant finding in the field.
