For me personally, it’s a pleasure to feel so much energy, enjoy such a good atmosphere, and meet ambitious and positive people in one place. Attending the Conference helped me to make many new acquaintances, connections and contacts with colleagues as well as experts from the world of cancer nursing. Through such gatherings I built my personality and learned planning, public presentation, action and organisational skills. Conferences are an opportunity to change the perspective on certain issues and a stimulus for new ideas and approaches. | EONS TO LAUNCH MAJOR CANCER PREVENTION INITIATIVE – PREVCAN |
|

| | The PrEvCan campaign will be officially launched at ESMO 22/EONS15 on 9 September in Paris. This ground-breaking drive to reduce rates of cancer across Europe is initiated and led by EONS with ESMO as key partner, alongside the European Cancer Patients Coalition (ECPC) and more than 50 other international and national organisations. The campaign is based on the European Code Against Cancer (ECAC), which sets out 12 recommendations ranging from physical activity and dietary guidelines to tobacco use and second-hand smoke. Over a year, starting from October 2022, each month will be dedicated to promoting one of these recommendations and highlighting the scientific evidence supporting it, with the dual objective of increasing awareness of how to prevent cancer among the general public and of providing healthcare professionals with a more comprehensive toolkit for communicating the importance of cancer prevention effectively. EONS President Johan de Munter explained: “EONS firmly believes that it is vital to bring together nurses and medical oncologists at the forefront of cancer care. The 12 recommendations will be tailored for the purpose of targeting different audiences, especially hard-to-reach and disadvantaged demographic groups, as inequalities in access to screening measures and resources are known to adversely affect populations like the elderly, people with disabilities and various underserved or underrepresented minorities. Nurses are the largest group of healthcare workers and also one of the most trusted professional groups. Patients interact with us throughout their lifetime, which gives us an opportunity to intervene early on with advice and support in cancer prevention.”

| CANCER CLINICAL TRIALS – READ THE LATEST YCN BLOG |

| | In this month’s blog, Helena McCallig from Ireland writes about research and cancer trials – words that may make nurses fearful of what is involved, but she assures us that once it is broken down it isn’t actually all that scary. Helena tells us: “Having recently taken up a new post as a cancer trials nurse, I have learned there is another whole world within cancer nursing. The purpose of a cancer trial is to assess new and effective ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. They typically involve investigating new drugs, combinations of commonly used drugs or new ways of treating and diagnosing cancer. Overall, the aim is to detect cancer specifically in the initial stages, treat cancer, prevent recurrence and improve the quality of life for people with cancer.”

| FIRST PHASE OF ABC4 NURSES STUDY REVEALS EDUCATION GAP |

| | The results of the first phase of the EONS' ABC4Nurses study, a systematic review of advanced breast cancer education programmes for nurses have been published in Nurse Education Today. ‘Advanced breast cancer education for cancer nurses: A systematic review’ is available open access to read online here: http://bitly.ws/t5SW
The review highlights that there are few education programmes which focus on education for nurses specific to advanced breast cancer. In programmes that do include components of study on advanced breast cancer, few are aligned with existing educational standards for advanced breast cancer education. Where such programmes have been evaluated, they have primarily focused on learners experience and self-reported outcomes. This review has made recommendations for more rigorous approaches to development and evaluation of education programmes, with consideration of the wider impacts on delivery of care and the experience and quality of life of people living with advanced breast cancer. |

| | Cancer nurses are invited to apply for a fellowship programme for cancer nurses in Europe as an extension of The European School of Oncology’s (ESO) Clinical Training Centres Fellowship programme for oncology physicians. The aim is to encourage the reduction of variability in outcomes of cancer care between countries, as well as within regions in each country, by giving cancer professionals the chance to experience working in multiprofessional teams in accredited centres in Europe. This fellowship programme is a collaboration between EONS and ESO. Priority will be given to European cancer nurses coming from countries that do not offer specialist training in cancer nursing and nurses who have participated in an ESO-EONS Masterclass. Deadline 15.10.22.

Applications are invited from registered nurses based in Europe who are:
• new or inexperienced in caring for people affected by cancer
• are seeking to develop their fundamental knowledge about cancer and its treatment, and principles of cancer care
• supported by their employer/manager.
You will be one of 20 nurses to participate in this pilot of the Early Career/Registration level of the European College of Cancer Nursing Career Pathway and to access e-learning modules aligned to the EONS Cancer Nursing Education Framework.
Participation in the first interactive level will begin in January 2023.
*The ECCN has been developed with the ongoing support and collaboration of the European School of Oncology (ESO) and ESCO – The College of the European School of Oncology.

| EONS TAKES THE TEMPERATURE OF CANCER NURSING ACROSS EUROPE – SURVEY |

| | In 2020, EONS collected data on the current status and development of cancer nursing from more than 650 nurses in 42 European countries. The analysed data were presented as the European Cancer Nursing Index 2020©, and described both the overall situation and also important differences between countries. This Index was presented at various meetings and congresses and also used to successfully advocate for better education, safety and recognition for cancer nursing in Europe – find out more here.
To measure development and progress, EONS now plan an update, the European Cancer nursing Index 2022©. EONS invites cancer nurses across Europe to respond to an online survey, covering similar areas as the previous version of the Index. The survey is available in 16 languages. We hope you will join us in continuing to improve cancer care by taking the survey.

| | | The European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) is following developments in Ukraine with great sadness. Our mission is to ensure that all people affected by cancer benefit from equal, safe and high quality care. This brutal act of war is endangering all people in Ukraine – including the oncology workforce who, with other healthcare colleagues, are working under unbearable pressure. EONS stands firmly against all forms of violence and is hoping that this appalling situation, and its far-reaching consequences, can be defused for the sake of all innocent parties caught up in it. We encourage people to back European and International organisations in their support of the people of Ukraine. EONS will try its best to find ways to reach out to the oncology workforce and people affected by cancer and help in capacity building where possible. War only brings loss, sadness and inhumane suffering and we truly hope for a peaceful resolution. Our thoughts are with all the people of Ukraine. |

| ANNUAL SCREENING BEFORE 50 LOWERS ABC - STUDY |

| | | A new study led by University of Ottawa has found Canadian provinces that annually screen women aged 40-49 had lower proportions of advanced breast cancer compared to women aged 50-59 from provinces that did not hold annual mammograms. The study, published in the latest edition of Current Oncology, found lower proportions of stage 2, 3 and 4 breast cancer in women 40-49 and lower proportions of stage 2 and 3 breast cancer in women 50-59 from provinces which screened the 40-49 age subset annually. | COOLER TEMPERATURES INHIBIT TUMOUR GROWTH IN MICE |

| | Turning down the thermostat seems to make it harder for cancer cells to grow, according to a study in mice by researchers at Karolinska Institute in Sweden. The study, published in the journal Nature, found that chilly temperatures activate heat-producing brown fat that consumes the sugars the tumours need to thrive. Similar metabolic mechanisms were found in a cancer patient exposed to a lowered room temperature.

| NEW CHIP COULD HELP DETECT METASTIC CANCER FASTER |

| | Cancer spreads via circulating tumour cells (CTCs) that travel through the blood to other organs, and they are nearly impossible to track. Now, researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA, have found a detection method that they claim could revolutionise cancer treatment by showing how cancers metastasise and at what stage they are. The researchers used the chip to screen blood samples from patients with ovarian or prostate cancers. This method could lead to earlier and more targeted treatment, beginning with a simple blood test.
