Sept. 16, 2019The job of a police officer has never been easy, but in the last few years it seems it has grown increasingly more difficult. Last night in St. Paul, an officer shot and killed a man who police say rear-ended an officer’s squad car at a stop sign and then jumped out of his car and engaged the officer in a fight. This comes a week after officers in St. Paul were called to the scene of three murders in the city within nine hours of one another. While the families of the shooting victims grieve their loss, we are also seeing another consequence. There’s growing concern in law enforcement that responding to traumatic calls over and over without mental health support can take a toll on officers’ well-being. On today’s show we talked about the recent shootings and the effect police work has on the officers who do it. As we continue to report on police issues, we’d like to hear from you. If you work in law enforcement, is there something you wish the public better understood about your job?~ Angela Davis, MPR News host | Updraft blog | Forecast
