TOURISM AUSTRALIA UPDATE

As I mentioned last week, I had the chance to reconnect in person with our strategic partners in China in a visit which took me to Guangzhou, Beijing and Shanghai. For me, one of the greatest outtakes was how positive sentiment is towards Australia with Chinese consumers, and also how willing they are to spend their discretionary income on travel after being closed for so long. However, competition is fierce, as the rest of the world also looks to China to help rebuild their visitor economies. Pre-COVID, China was our leading visitor market where we welcomed 1.4 million visitors from China, contributing $12.4 billion in visitor spend – so we are doing everything we can to reclaim demand from this important market.

It was a busy week topped off by the announcement by Tourism Minister, Senator the Hon Don Farrell that Cairns will be the host of our ‘G’Day Australia’ event from Monday 9 October to Thursday 12 October 2023. The event brings together 300 travel agents from around the world to experience Australia’s world class tourism offerings first-hand and network with industry peers. You can read more on the event below.
