| | | | | TOURISM AUSTRALIA UPDATE | The domestic market has never been so important to our industry - and frustratingly - with the ebb and flow of border closures, never more uncertain. I gave a short update on the industry webinar last week about the status of our domestic campaign and activities. We had hoped to launch the next phase of our domestic campaign by now, but have delayed the launch in order to wait until the time is right so that we can maximise the impact of the campaign. We are still undertaking a lot of content and partnership activity to keep travel front of mind, and on that note, it’s great to see that Australian Traveller’s ‘100 Ways to Holiday Here This Year’ edition, produced in partnership with Tourism Australia, sold out and has been reprinted. It shows that there is a lot of appetite for new and interesting domestic experiences. Well done to Quentin Long and team! On our webinar next week, we will include an update on domestic partnerships and distribution, and will also introduce Andrew Hutchinson, our newly-appointed General Manager for Domestic and New Zealand. | | | | International student pilot for Adelaide | Under a trial program, 300 students from China, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore will fly into Adelaide in early September. The pilot will test all the quarantine and safety protocols and will allow universities to work out how they can safely return international students to Australia. The students and their universities will pay for the required quarantine arrangements. |

| | | Appointment of new General Manager, Domestic and New Zealand | Tourism Australia has appointed Andrew Hutchinson to the newly created role which is responsible for leading the organisation’s focus on the domestic tourism opportunity, as well as the approach in New Zealand once border restrictions start to lift. With 25 years of experience in the tourism industry, Mr Hutchinson started in the Sydney-based role this month. Mr Hutchinson joins Tourism Australia from Adventure World Travel and he has previously worked for major brands such as Flight Centre, Qantas Holidays, STA and Pinpoint Mastercard. In 2019, domestic travel accounted for $78.8 billion in overnight trips and 1.4 million visitors from New Zealand spent $2.6 billion in Australia. |

Speakers will include Paul Scurrah, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Virgin Australia and industry expert and Tourism Australian director, Anna Guillan. | | | | | Tasmania launches visitor economy strategy and announces incentives for intrastate travel | Tasmania has launched the T21 Visitor Economy Action Plan 2020-2022 focused on rebuilding the tourism and hospitality sectors. The Plan has been developed through the T21 partnership between the Tasmanian Government and the tourism industry through the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania. Tasmania has extended its border closure until 1 December 2021 and announced a series of support and incentive measures to help drive intrastate visitation. The Tasmanian government has also announced a $7.5 million program to support industry, which includes travel incentives to encourage Tasmanians to stay midweek in accommodation or to purchase a tourism experience for any day of the week. Local businesses will also be encouraged to conduct overnight or off-site conferences, meetings and team building workshops around Tasmania. |

| | | | Australian Traveller reprint of 100 Ways to Holiday Here This Year edition | In June this year, Tourism Australia partnered with Australian Traveller Magazine on their ‘100 Ways to Holiday Here This Year’ special edition. The 156-page special edition celebrated the many incredible experiences throughout Australia and encouraged Australians to explore their own backyard. Tourism Australia has also put together a list of ten of the best hidden gem short breaks based on the ‘100 Ways to Holiday Here This Year’ edition. The magazine was so popular that it sold out in more than 250 newsagents in three days. Australian Traveller is now doing a reprint and the magazine will be available for purchase in over 650 Woolworths stores around the country. Consumers can also access the content online here. |
