Oil price crash shows up oil ETP vulnerabilities

Another extraordinary week of trading which has shown off the deep liquidity and versatility of most ETFs. ETPs, not so much, with our story on what’s happened to US ETP USO with the collapse into minus figures for the oil price. Take a second to peek at their performance figures on their own site and make your own conclusions on this bizarre tale. As our in-house guru Algo-Chain’s Allan Lane advises: “We recommend that most investors should stick to plain Stocks & Bonds' ETFs, where diversification is your friend.”

We have also been examining ETFs that are set to profit from these difficult times, with an interview with Pacer ETFs on their specialised real estate offering, linked to data centres and infrastructure hubs. We also have DWS’s Luke Oliver walking us through what ETFs did well in the market volatility of early 2020 (ESG modestly out-performed, he notes), and how ETF trading held up during periods which could have become difficult.

We also have two comment pieces, one from Nichole Kramer, Manager, Distribution ETF Operations, SS&C ALPS, who has commented on the different models of semi and non-transparent ETF offerings and one from Rahul Bhushan, co-founder of European thematic ETF provider, RizeETF, who believes that cybersecurity risks are set to soar as the impact of Covid-19 are felt around the world.

We are very busy finalising the programme for etfLIVE, our digital summit to be held over three days in May. Please register to attend for free here.
