This week we celebrate all things intelligent, whether artificial or natural with a piece on the Big Ideas for 2021 report from ARK Invest, a firm dedicated to discovering disruptive innovation and which has seen such extraordinary growth over 2020. The ‘most provocative research conclusions for the year’ from ARK are worth catching up on, and ranges from Deep Learning, via bitcoin, through robotics to Long-Read Sequencing.

Also laying out its views for the coming year is Bloomberg, which this year included five ETFs in its list of 100 global public companies, credits, market strategies and ETFs that BI analysts believe will benefit from significant fundamental catalysts and developments in 2021.

Metals feature this week as well. Firstly, with the launch of four physically-backed metal ETCs on the LSE from new ETC provider Global Palladium and secondly in a note on the excitements in the silver market as it drew the attention of the Reddit trading community.

Finally, we have two big interviews with speakers at our etfLIVE Spotlight Series which launches in March this year. Our first is Morgan Creek’s Mark Yusko, a veteran investor with an institutional and hedge fund background, who has taken his first step into the ETF pool. He, along with EXOS Financial, has launched a SPAC ETF and tells ETF Express about his conversion to ETFs when they wear their active guise, and the strengths of the SPAC space. Our second big interview is with pioneer ETF investor, Mary Hagerland of Raymond James Canada, who also enjoyed something of a conversion to ETFs back in 2008 and has been using them in her model portfolios ever since. Seasoned investor Mark Yusko, former CIO of the University of North Carolina Endowment, and current CEO and CIO of USD1.5 billion Morgan Creek, has joined forces with EXOS Financial, a NY-based fintech company helmed by Brady Dougan, the former CEO of Credit Suisse, to launch his first ETF, the Morgan Creek – Exos SPAC Originated ETF (SPXZ).

Global Palladium brings four physically-backed metal ETCs to the LSE

Global Palladium Fund, founded in 2016 by Russian mining company Norilsk Nickel, has launched four physically backed metal ETCs on the LSE, with a focus on sustainability, TERs of between 0.145 per cent and 0.20 per cent, and a blockchain-based infrastructure.

One of this week's new launches gives investors access to both pre- and post-merger Special Acquisition Companies (SPACs), or blank cheque companies, through the first ever ETF from EXOS Financial, the Morgan Creek – Exos SPAC Originated ETF. Other newcomers include four physically-backed metals ETCs from Global Palladium, Ossiam's Food For Biodiversity ETF, a low-volatility equity income fund from Truemark, and for crypto fans, the world's first Polkadot ETP from 21Shares.
