Gold rush Gold finally made it through that psychologically important record price of USD2,000 per troy ounce level this week, fuelled in no little part by gold ETFs. We report on that historic price move, based on uncertainty, and the extraordinary size of GLD’s USD80 billion of physical gold assets, which apparently sit in vaults in central London somewhere. Our interviews this week are with Ben Slavin, global head of ETF asset servicing at BNY Mellon, who is coming up to two months in the job, having seen the most extraordinary times in the ETF industry and the world. We also have an interview with Optiver’s Maarten Botman who gives us a picture of how the firm experienced the intense period of trading in ETFs during the volatility from earlier this year. Tabula, fixed income ETF experts, have been conducting research on fixed income ESG and found that professional investors want to see more innovation among fixed income ESG ETFs and that outperformance is more important than tracking, indicating that investors see ESG as an opportunity as well as a requirement. I urge you to vote in the ETF Express US Awards. Find out who has been pre-selected by Bloomberg and place your votes. The firms with the most votes win. We are also working on the programme for our etfLIVE North America digital summit in October. The programme is here and do register your place now. Investors go free!
