In October of last year, Maybe Happy Ending was a blip in a Broadway season packed with Hollywood stars and giant spectacles. Seven months later, it has become the surprise hit of the year, receiving 10 Tony nominations, including Best Musical, which it just might win. There are plenty of reasons for its success, but from where we’re standing, the secret ingredient is Dez Duron.
The 35-year-old plays Gil Brentley, a Frank Sinatra type. But Duron doesn’t just play a jazz singer on Broadway — he’s the crooner this generation’s been waiting for, the obvious successor to Sinatra, Mel Tormé and Michael Bublé.
For the latest installment of our Who’s Next series, we spoke with Duron about tasting stardom on The Voice a decade ago, his tense audition for Maybe Happy Ending, his original music and what he wrote in his journal after New York Times theater critic Jesse Green attended a performance.
