EXCLUSIVE: Von der Leyen responds to MEPs on Huawei lobbying loopholes

Ursula von der Leyen has ruled out fast-tracking the EU's lobbying register review, in a letter to MEPs following concerns about Huawei’s alleged influence campaign in Brussels.

In the letter, seen by Euractiv, the Commission president responded to a March request from the Parliament’s informal anti-corruption forum, which urged the Commission to launch that review “as a matter of urgency."

Their request came after Belgian authorities opened an investigation into a suspected Huawei cash-for-influence scheme involving several EU lawmakers.

However, in her reply, von der Leyen did not commit to any immediate overhaul. Instead, she stated that the upcoming review of the transparency register should be seen as an “opportunity” to assess whether the tool meets its goals.
