The markets may be conspiring to keep us home for the holidays. AL.com's Heather Gann reports that a study has placed Huntsville International and Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International among the most expensive airports to fly out of. QR Code Generator published the study, and it ranked Huntsville's airport No. 2 in the nation with an average fare of $543.66. Only Tallahassee International ranked higher. Birmingham-Shuttlesworth, meanwhile, was at No. 11 in the nation with an average fare of $496.08. So maybe we'll just wave to one another on I-20. |

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix set a record among quarterbacks from Alabama on Monday Night Football, reports AL.com's Mark Inabinett. It happened when Nix threw a 93-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Mims in a 41-32 win against the Cleveland Browns. That was the longest scoring pass ever thrown by a quarterback from an Alabama high school or college. That's no small feat, given the rich NFL history of Alabama's football talent. Quarterbacks who have not thrown 93-yard touchdown passes include Joe Namath, Ken Stabler and Bart Starr. Nix's toss beat the previous record of 91 yards set by Starr in 1960 and matched by Cam Newton in 2011. Nix played high school ball at Pinson Valley before starting three seasons at Auburn. |

Army Corporal Waymon Slaten's remains will be laid to rest in Arab, Alabama, on Jan. 13, 74 years after he was killed in action in Korea, reports AL.com's Heather Gann. Slaten's remains have been with many others at the Punchbowl in Honolulu. That's what they call the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, where Slaten was interred as X-256 since 1954. Before that, X-256 had been buried in South Korea since the remains were recovered in October 1950. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency was able to finally to identify X-256 as Slaten on Aug. 14. Details of Slaten's death are not known. He was serving with Baker Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division when he was reported missing in action after his unit engaged in combat on Sept. 1, 1950 near Yongsan, South Korea. With the area under heavy fire, his body wasn't able to be immediately recovered. From his foxhole, Slaten wrote his final letter home: “Here I am in my foxhole, trying to write these few lines. My buddies on each side of me have already got killed and I am expecting to be killed anytime. Somebody is going to have to pray. This is all I have time to write. Goodbye forever.” Corporal Waymon Slaten was 18 years old when he died. |
