Start planning your week now! | | FEATURED SESSIONS: | Energy Storage: Novel Approaches for Integrated Storage Systems Tuesday, November 17 | 1:00pm 2:00pm CST Utilities around the world are looking for energy storage solutions to smooth the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources into the grid. Hydropower, both pumped storage and conventional, plays a vital role in providing energy storage. During this session, two technical papers will be presented, focused on the theme of novel approaches for providing integrated storage systems. One technical presentation will discuss the integration of three technologies seawater pumped hydropower energy storage, seawater reverse osmosis, and renewable energy into a single facility that can simultaneously provide clean energy generation, energy storage and fresh water. The second technical presentation will cover how hybrid energy storage systems composed of Li-ion batteries and ultracapacitors, enabled by a novel coordinated control system, can enable integrated hydropower and hybrid energy storage systems to provide fast frequency and voltage regulation. Speakers: Karen Studarus, Senior Engineer, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Joan Leal, President, Oceanus Power and Water Mayank Panwar, Research Engineer, Idaho National Laboratory
| | | Market Trends: Novel Cybersecurity Capabilities to Meet Hydropowers Evolving Challenges Wednesday, November 18 | 2:30pm - 3:30pm CST As the hydropower infrastructure in the U.S. increasingly benefits from interconnected digital systems to improve reliability, reduce costs and expand services, there is the vital need to ensure that this infrastructure is safeguarded against an increasingly broad range of threat actors. During this session, the evolution of the industry will be discussed, along with new resources that can be brought to bear on these challenges. Speakers: Mark Christian, Technology Manager, U.S. Department of Energy Kenneth Ham, Program mManager, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Darlene Thorsen, Cybersecurity Scientist, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Tim Welch, Hydropower Program Manager, Waterpower Technologies Office, U.S. Department of Energy
