Download NowThis Week in Washington, D.C.Last week the House of Representatives passed the “Respect for Marriage Act” (H.R. 8404) with strong bipartisan support. Largely introduced as a response to Justice Thomas’s concurring opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson and in anticipation of the upcoming midterms, this bill codifies a right to same-sex marriage that was previously found in the 2015 Obergefell decision. The ERLC is strongly opposed to this legislation. We believe marriage is an institution created by God, not by man, and that marriage requires the specific union of a man and a woman for life (Gen. 2:24). The language of the bill also raises religious liberty concerns and it remains unclear if it would codify federal recognition to civil marriages that go beyond the scope of two individuals in states that allow it. This week the ERLC sent a letter of opposition voicing these concerns to all 50 Senators who will now consider the bill in the coming days. We will continue to advocate against this harmful bill that goes against God’s good design for marriage and poses a threat to those who hold such a view. Ben Mitchell with Why physicians are morally and professionally culpable for performing abortions Laws may not be able to change attitudes, but they can encourage certain practices and penalize the infraction of the law for the sake of preventing harm. Would the criminalization of abortion have stopped Hammond from performing abortions? No one knows for sure, not even Hammond. People violate laws all the time. But the remedy is not to have no laws, but to enforce those we have. He should have been legally culpable as well as morally and professionally culpable. Jenny Marcelene with 5 ways your church can faithfully support your missionaries A church’s commitment and support for sent-ones is a key ingredient to seeing the gospel reach the ends of the earth and extends beyond prayer (although prayer is a non-negotiable component). The partnership between the local church and its missionaries is a work in progress and doesn’t transpire without intentionality. Jack Klumpenhower with How parents can raise their kids to live by faith If morality or ideology or healthy habits made life Christian, our approach would be simple: Try hard. Think straight. Do right. But faith is an offbeat path with practices that feel unnatural: Receive from God. Trust his Word. Follow him. Rest in Jesus. Most Christian parents find it harder to lead their families in that—in faith. Share Tweet Forward
