Congress must stop abusing our data: Urge your members to support the Algorithmic Justice and Online Platform Transparency Act today. Friend, It feels like a daily occurrence: A new story breaks about huge tech platforms like Facebook and Google abusing our data to discriminate and spread hate and disinformation. And unless we see meaningful action from Congress: nothing is going to change. Urge Congress to take action against algorithmic discrimination now. There is no single piece of legislation we could pass that will undo all this damage. We have to come at this issue from multiple angles to succeed and create the kind of world we want to build. Sen. Edward Markey and Rep. Doris Matsui have introduced new legislation — the Algorithmic Justice and Online Platform Transparency Act — that would tackle a critical piece of this puzzle and prevent online platforms’ discriminatory use of personal information. Tell Rep. Lieu and Sens. Feinstein and Padilla to support the Algorithmic Justice and Online Platform Transparency Act today. The bill would require online platforms to annually disclose to users their content-moderation practices, and how they collect and use each user’s personal information in their algorithmic processes. It would also make it illegal for platforms to process user data in a discriminatory manner based on race, ethnicity, gender identity, religious belief, sexual orientation, disability status or immigration status, among other categories. The Algorithmic Justice and Online Platform Transparency Act would protect our online civil liberties and aggressively fight racial injustices committed by the world’s most powerful technology companies and a wide range of smaller platforms. Urge your lawmakers to take action today. Thank you for all that you do, Candace, Carmen and the rest of the Free Press Action team freepress.net P.S. Companies like Facebook and Google have long misused our personal data to discriminate and spread hate and disinformation. Urge your senators and representative to support the Algorithmic Justice and Online Platform Transparency Act to protect your online civil liberties. |
