“I think the Kona coffee has a richer flavor than any other, be it grown where it may and call it by what name you please.” ~Mark Twain in Letter’s from Hawai‘i Nahenahe Farm is located in Middle Ke‘ei, within the ahupua’a, or traditional land division encompassing the coastal and mountain resources, of Kealakekua, a major agricultural zone, known as ‘āpa‘a. One of the most beautiful, culturally and historically significant locations in all the Hawaiian Islands, Kealakekua translated as “the path of the gods,” is also one of the most productive. One of the earliest accounts of the Kona Field System was documented in the 1792 journals of Archibald Menzies, a surgeon and a naturalist who traveled to Hawai‘i with Captain George Vancouver. The first coffee was planted in Kona in 1828 by Reverend Samuel Ruggles, an American Protestant missionary who had originally come to the Islands with the First Company of American missionaries. And today, the area known as the Kona Coffee Belt sustains over 700 hundred independently owned coffee farms, most of them family owned and operated are less than five acres in size. Optimal growing conditions on the slopes of Mauna Loa provides the coffee plants with plentiful rainfall and moderate temperatures, giving them their unique flavor. Though the elevations of Kona coffee farms are lower than the elevations of some of the world's top Arabica coffees, when it comes to coffee bean quality a bigger factor than elevation is how fast the coffee cherry (fruit) mature on the coffee plant, and the Kona region's growing conditions provide for a long maturation period. We love coffee here in Hawai‘i. It plays an important role in our local economy and ties us to our history. Our coffee a premium gourmet Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica var. typica) is 100% Kona grown and pesticide free. At Nahenahe Farm we hand select and pick only the ripe cherries to ensure that only those at the peak ripeness are chosen. We then add our own personal touch during the small batch roasting process, focusing on bringing out the inherent fruitiness in a coffee while showcasing its natural sweetness. Our coffee is known for its simple yet rich flavor, well-balanced with a medium body, a complex aroma, bright acidity yet classically balanced taste. Often exhibiting spicy and also buttery qualities with subtle winey tones, intensely aromatic, and with a great aftertaste/finish.
