TODAY'S TOP STORY Reddit 101 I always want to keep you in the know. You may have heard of Reddit but never really got into using it. Unlike other social media sites, Reddit is more group- or topicβfocused. Think of it as various rooms of people sharing and talking about one particular topic. About 73.1 million folks use it daily, and there are 2.2 million groups you can check out. If youβre totally new to Reddit, hereβs everything you need to know. Reddit, set β¦ go! Reddit looks and feels like an old-school forum or message board: Members, or Redditors, can create and post to individual forums called subreddits. Posts have comment threads attached where others can weigh in. You'll see little arrows on posts and comments, too β these are upvotes and downvotes. Thatβs the crowd-based ranking system Redditors use to weed out spam and promote the good stuff. You don't need an account to browse β¦ But itβs free and comes with a few perks. For one, you can post or respond to othersβ threads and earn karma, a points system based on how many upvotes your post or reply gets. You can also subscribe to subreddits to get the latest posts on your Reddit homepage β look for that big Join button. π‘ Privacy tip: Donβt use identifying traits in your screen name! Reddit accounts are anonymous by default. If you include clues like your city or nickname, itβs easier than you might think for people to ID you. Lingo to know Donβt let the acronyms scare you. Here are some of the most common ones on Reddit: OP: βOriginal poster,β aka the person who started the thread. TIL: βToday I learned,β which is used when someone shares something that blew their mind. AMA: βAsk me anything.β Good for soliciting no-holds-barred questions. People from CEOs to celebrities and soldiers have done live Reddit AMAs. Bill Gates has done 11 AMAs. Guess what phone he uses? (Iβll tell you at the end of this story!) ELI5: βExplain like I'm 5β β for when you need someone to explain something generally pretty complicated to you very, very simply. NSFW: βNot safe (or suitable) for work,β which is self-explanatory. Must-follow subreddits r/Komando: A fan just set this up for anyone to post a comment or engage with other people like you who get this newsletter and listen to my shows. Just know if you have a tech question, you can tap into my team of IT experts here in my forum. r/YouShouldKnow: A subreddit with important PSAs, life hacks and fun science facts. r/AmIthe*sshole: The real name isnβt asterisked. This is a subreddit to weigh in on othersβ arguments or to be vindicated by strangers on a disagreement thatβs been bothering you. Juicy, juicy β¦ r/Amazing: You never know what youβll find here, but itβs usually great, like the most expensive rope in the world or an incredible throw from a Japanese baseball player. r/Aww: Dedicated to all things cute and cuddly. Your daily dose of awwww. π One more thing: If youβre ever wondering if something is a scam, use the search box on Reddit. Odds are, someone somewhere has an opinion about it. π€ So, what phone does olβ Bill Gates use? A Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, gifted by the chairman of Samsung himself. I wonder if he has a good voice. |

WEB WATERCOOLER π¨ TikTok vape dealers: TikTokkers are illegally selling vapes to kids using secret codes to trick parents. Red flag phrases include βelf bundleβ (i.e., an Elf Bar vape), βALL FAKEβ (used to slip past Communist China censors) and β#noIDβ (no identification required). If your kid recently got hair scrunchies, beauty products or candy in the mail, check the package. Tesla, meet train: A Tesla driver nearly crashed into a moving train when his car failed to brake in self-driving mode. His dashcam shows him swerving at full speed just in time. Just three years ago, Tesla's image rank (a measure of their brand reputation) was eighth among the top 100 companies. Now, itβs plummeted to No. 63. Canβt imagine this is helping. π― #Twinning: At age 66, Devlin Donaldson used a βdigital twinβ to reverse his Type 2 diabetes. OK, not a literal twin β the Twin Health app, which uses insights from your diet, activity, blood glucose levels and more to give you hyperpersonalized advice. The instant feedback helped Donaldson lose 40 pounds and go off medication. This is why I love tech, folks! Child ID theft is on the rise: If youβre not on the lookout, you might not catch it for years. When your kid goes to rent their first apartment or get a student loan, they could find theyβre already thousands of dollars in debt. Protect your kidβs credit now β Iβve got steps on how to do it on my site. π Finally, some respect! TikTok teens are asking their moms to bust out their best β80s dance moves, and for once, itβs not for laughs. The videos have racked up tens of millions of views, and Gen Z is genuinely impressed. Whatβs your favorite β80s dance hit? Mineβs βTake on Meβ by Aβha! π Sun-spiracy: Some popular influencers donβt believe the sun causes skin cancer (WSJ, paywalled); instead, they blame sunscreen. Research proves sunscreen protects you from cancer β it doesnβt cause it. I posted a pic of me by the pool the other day. I canβt believe some people didnβt get my sunscreen pun in the caption. Please tell me you do! Over Wordle? Thereβs a new game hidden on your iPhone called Quartiles. You score points by making as many words as you can from three or four lettered tiles. The iOS 17.5 update includes the game for all Apple News+ subscribers (you can get a free three-month trial if you donβt have it already). To find the game, open Apple News and search for Puzzles > Quartiles. π Psst, did you know you can take me on the go? Fire up the Kim Komando Show podcast on your next walk. Get it here on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. Iβd love to keep you company! |

BY THE NUMBERS 18 years old The age of Kabosu, the βdogeβ that inspired a cryptocurrency. The beloved Shiba Inu pup passed away last Friday, leaving millions of internet fans to mourn her β and, at its peak, a $90 billion dogecoin empire as her legacy. In the aftermath of FTX, the price of dogecoin has fallen nearly 400%, but Kabosu lives on in the big Coinbase in the sky. $210 a pair For fancy jeggings, or leggings that look like jeans. Yep, denim sweatpants are the latest Gen Z fashion trend, and high-end brands are selling them for $120 to $250 a pair. You can get βem for way less on Amazon, of course, if you have to own a pair. $745 million The price for a top-secret Air Force Bβ21 Raider. The U.S. nuclear bomber came out of stealth for its first flight test last week. Itβs designed to be βvirtually invisibleβ to enemy radar, and it pretty much looks like a UFO with wings. Trust me, youβre gonna wanna see this. |
