New Mexico launched adult-use sales April 1. New Jersey opened sales on April 21, one day after the 4/20 holiday. New York’s adult-use program is on the way, with hopes to launch sales late this year or early 2023. And Rhode Island just became the 19th state to legalize, with Democratic Gov. Dan McKee signing the Rhode Island Cannabis Act into law on May 25. It’s a busy year in cannabis, as ever. So, what is the rest of the country waiting for? It’s the perennial question. Sure, one shouldn’t just do something simply because everyone else is doing it, but if that “something” is providing access to wellness and leisure products while raking in billions in sales … what does the calculus look like? Delaware Democratic Gov. John Carney vetoed a decriminalization bill on May 24—despite the bill receiving three-fifths majority support in both the House and the Senate. The CBT team tagged Delaware with a “likely” chance to legalize cannabis in 2022. Carney’s veto doesn’t send his state in that direction, necessarily, but there are many roads to reform. In other news, Maryland voters will have their say on adult-use legalization this November. Similarly, organizers in Oklahoma are currently working to gather the required 94,911 signatures to place it on the November ballot. And North Carolina lawmakers have again introduced adult-use legislation after last year’s efforts stalled at the end of their 2021 legislative session. Zach Mentz, Senior Editor |
