FERC proposes a ‘first ready, first served’ approach to interconnection backlog |
|
|
Did you know that there are more than 8,000 projects waiting to connect to the grid representing over 1,000 GW of generation capacity? Did you also realize that it takes an average of 3.7 years for new generation to interconnect? At this rate, it will be impossible to meet the decarbonization goals set out by the U.S. government and supported by the electric utilities in North America. However, last week, FERC issued a notice of proposed rulemaking that seeks to address many of the bottlenecks that exist in the interconnection process. Some of the highlights include making it more difficult for speculative projects to enter the interconnection queue, creating a publicly available interactive visual representation of available interconnection capacity, and studying new hybrid projects the way they are intended to operate (and holding project owners to those confines.) The NOPR is a first step in reforming the interconnection process that was designed for different types of generation capacity. |
