CHARGING AHEAD: Just about every customer at Alex Katz’s used car dealership in Metairie wants to look at an electric vehicle, but few buy them. The main reason: the lack of charging infrastructure in Louisiana. That could start to change over the next few years, though, as New Orleans adds 30 conventional chargers in underserved neighborhoods and Louisiana prepares to spend almost $100 million to put fast chargers along interstate highway corridors. THE TEMPESTS: A second hurricane has formed in the Atlantic Ocean, with Earl forecast to reach Category 3 strength near Bermuda in the next few days and Danielle weakening northwest of the Azores islands. Two other tropical weather disturbances are the subject of scrutiny in the eastern Atlantic. (Sign up for our free Hurricane Center newsletter, emailed when the tropics threaten the Gulf Coast.) RESCUE KREWE: Charmaine Neville was at home in Bywater several weeks ago when lightning struck the house, blowing out a window, cracking most of the plaster walls and frying the electrical wiring and everything that was plugged in. The total damage ran to the tens of thousands of dollars, and Neville’s homeowners insurance had lapsed. Then she got help from a marching krewe with a history of aiding culture bearers such as herself. Thanks for starting your Thursday with Morning Headlines. D.B. |
