Do You Know Your Family History? October is Family History Month, and as the weather gets cooler, it’s a great time to start (or continue!) researching your genealogy. The Library can help! We have online databases, classes, meetings, and a photo scanner available for your use. First, let me introduce our databases (accessible online with your library card): HeritageQuest and World Vital Records. HeritageQuest includes searchable census records, genealogy books, local history articles, Revolutionary War records, and more. World Vital Records gives you access to records such as the census, birth and death, marriage, and immigration lists. We offer classes on both of these resources and, additionally, FamilySearch, a free, nonprofit family history site. Attend a class, and let us show you the ropes! Can’t make it to a scheduled class? If you have specific questions about how to use these resources, contact Mark, and ask to make a one-on-one appointment. We recently started a new group called Genealogy Conversations. Come talk about what you’re currently working on, your successes, and your brick walls. It will be a give-and-take conversation — you might be able to help someone, and they might be able to help you. Lastly, we have a free photo scanner! Do you have old photos that you want digitized? Preserve your family’s memories for yourself and the next generation. The cool thing about this photo scanner is that it can automatically upload the scanned images to your account on FamilySearch – a great backup and organization system. |
