It's less than a week until the Nov. 5 election and Cuyahoga County residents are facing long lines at the Board of Elections, where about 42,000 people have voted. So far, Cuyahoga leads the state with the most absentee ballots requested ... about 175,000. About 113,000 – or 65% – have been returned. Statewide, more Republicans have voted so far than Democrats. Early votes: With one week left until Election Day 2024, more than 1.8 million people in Ohio have cast their vote. Molly Walsh reports that 743,000 of the 1.1 million absentee ballots requested by Ohio voters had been returned as of Tuesday morning. About 942,000 people have voted early in person at their local Board of Elections since early voting began on Oct. 8. Child care: Ohio has 800,313 children ages newborn to 5, many of them in child care and all who would benefit from a quality preschool program, according to research from a newly formed alliance of researchers from 14 Big Ten schools. Laura Hancock reports roughly 40 researchers from the schools are looking for best practices in hopes that the new focus that business groups and state and local governments put on early childhood learning results in improvements. Parental leave: New Republican-authored legislation in the Ohio House would offer employers up to $54,000 per year in tax credits if they provide at least eight weeks of parental leave to their workers, reports Jeremy Pelzer. House Bill 682, introduced last week with bipartisan support, is designed by its authors to encourage companies to provide paid leave to new mothers and fathers rather than requiring employers to offer such benefits, as some other states do. Port grant: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday announced it’s giving the Port of Cleveland a $94 million grant to help it install energy-saving equipment, reports Sabrina Eaton. The money will help pay for electric cargo handling equipment and vessels at the Port of Cleveland, charging infrastructure, solar generation, and a battery energy storage system, as well as vessel shore power. Vance remarks: Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance told a rally that the uproar over jokes made during a Trump rally Sunday at Madison Square Garden in New York was overblown, Robert Higgs reports. “I think that we have to stop getting so offended at every little thing in the United States of America. I’m so over it,” he said. |

Vacancy credit: Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne is proposing a new way of budgeting for vacant positions next year that is intended to save the county money by providing more control over hiring and preventing potentially unnecessary spending, Kaitlin Durbin reports. Euclid discussion: A Euclid group dedicated to finding community-driven solutions to gun violence wants to hear from the city’s residents, reports Cory Shaffer. The Euclid Hope Task Force will host three community discussions next month, where residents are encouraged to have “open and honest conversations” about gun violence in their neighborhoods and brainstorm ideas on how to address it. Warm Halloween: Usually, Cleveland is beginning to brace for cold temperatures and snow by the end of October. But this year, you can instead brace for some of the warmest temperatures for the end of the month - and this late in the year - on record. Berea development: The Browns on Tuesday released more details on what they and their partners plan to do with 16 acres next to the team's Berea training complex. Megan Sims reports District 46 at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus will include sports-centered features like a community field for multiple youth, high school and adult sports, a community fieldhouse and a sports medicine facility operated by University Hospitals. |

Keshaun Williams: Authorities on Tuesday searched the Cuyahoga River involving Keshaun Williams, a Cleveland teenager who has been missing since June 2023. Police are seeking to recover vehicles that are linked to the youth, officials said. Keshaun was 15 years old when he went missing from a house party on Fleet and Gertrude avenues, Olivia Mitchell reports. '90 day Fiancé': A former star of the reality TV show “90 Day Fiancé” pleaded for mercy moments before a federal judge sentenced him to slightly more than a decade in prison for downloading thousands of images of child pornography. Michael Eloshway, 42, of Twinsburg, said he unknowingly downloaded the child pornography during large-batch downloads of adult pornography, reports Adam Ferrise. Loaded gun: A man accused of handing his wife a loaded gun before she died by suicide has been charged with murder and is set to appear before a judge next month. Michael Krupienski, 71, of Vermilion, was accused of giving the gun to Marie Krupienski, 81, after she expressed suicidal thoughts, reports Lucas Daprile. |
