Surgeon dismissed, medical board investigating after CEO participates in surgery without a license

Tennessee-based Ballad Health dismissed Nathan Smith, MD, a cardiothoracic surgeon who invited then-CEO of Bristol Regional Medical Center Greg Neal to participate in a surgery without a medical license. Neal was in the operating room to observe the procedure, but upon Smith’s invitation, he made the initial incision. After conducting an investigation, Ballad asked Neal to resign.

Persevering in a pandemic: MSPs endure as the COVID-19 crisis continues

When we hear the terms frontline workers or people on the front lines, we often picture medical scrubs and stethoscopes, physicians covered head to toe in personal protective equipment, nurses treating patients, and so forth. First responders such as police officers, firefighters, and EMTs may also come to mind, as well as those working in pharmacies and grocery stores—potentially exposing themselves to the virus in order to protect us or enable us to continue to obtain our essentials. The person most people do not picture is the MSP, who plays a crucial role in determining whether physicians and other clinical practitioners are trained, competent, and eligible to practice medicine on those front lines.
