Hello hello, Do you believe in magic? It's easy to see how people used to when it comes to a solar eclipse. Imagine standing in fields in Northumberland, at sea on the Pacific or even on the slopes of Machu Picchu itself as the daylight drained from the sky. From hungry dragons to cheeky upstarts drinking the nectar of the gods, the stories that surround eclipses are almost as interesting as the event itself. And another one is coming. On 29th March, a partial eclipse will be visible in the north Atlantic from the extreme west of Canada, Greenland, Iceland, western Europe and the northwest of Africa. But you don't need to satisfy yourself with vague stories about dragons. You can read about them properly with our guide to Solar Eclipses by Sheridan Williams. Williams watched his first total solar eclipse through smoked glass from his school playground in 1954. Since then, he has travelled the world – from Antigua to Australia, Mexico to Madagascar, Siberia to Sumatra – to see 18 total solar eclipses. Once a professional ‘rocket scientist’ for the UK Ministry of Defence, Williams has become a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, received the British Astronomical Association’s Lydia Brown medal, and served as secretary of the Open University Astronomy Club. With all that in mind, it's worth hearing what he has to say. Until next week, Abi Our Guide to Solar Eclipses A partial solar eclipse is happening next week, on 29th March. The partial eclipse will be visible in the north Atlantic from the extreme west of Canada, Greenland, Iceland, western Europe and the northwest of Africa.
