Several Middle Eastern states – notably Turkey, Qatar, and Iraq – both align formally with Washington while supporting terrorism and otherwise fomenting disorder. Turkey facilitates and hosts Hamas. Qatar supports domiciles Hamas, finances violence across the region, and buys off U.S. politicians, think tanks, and universities. Iraq supports the Shia militias who kill American soldiers. They avoid the repercussions of these actions by hosting U.S. troops. How did Washington get into this predicament? What are its costs? What can Americans do to change the situation?

Michael Pregent is a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute where he focuses on national security threats. He was a U.S. Army intelligence officer with 28 years’ experience working on Middle Eastern issues. He served in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in Iraq. He was a liaison officer in Egypt in 2000, a counter-insurgency intelligence officer at CENTCOM in 2001, and a company commander in Afghanistan in 2002. Mr. Pregent holds a BA from Indiana University-Indianapolis and an MA from George Washington University. He is also a graduate of the US Army’s Defense Language Institute in Modern Standard Arabic and Egyptian Dialect.

He served as advisor to Israel's minister of foreign affairs and deputy prime minister in 2009-15, and has also worked with Israel's Ministers of Intelligence, Agriculture and Rural Development, Energy, Water and Infrastructure, Defense, Tourism, Internal Security, and Immigrant Absorption and as an advisor to The Negev Forum. Originally from the UK, he moved to Israel in 2001. He holds a BA from University College London and an MA from Reichman University (IDC Herzliya).
