| We hope you’re having an enjoyable summer, whether on holidays or at home. While it’s certainly good to relax and recharge batteries, many UBI advocates are already busy preparing activities for the forthcoming weeks.
The 2021 annual congress of BIEN (18–21 August ) will certainly be the highlight of the summer for the worldwide UBI movement. Among the 200 speakers you will also find Antonis Triantafyllakis, Vice Chair of UBIE, with a workshop on writing fiction stories from a basic income future perspective. It’s also a good time to prepare for the 14th International Basic Income Week, which takes place 20–26 September. Many exciting activities are planned – including Basic Income Marches around the globe! And of course, this week will also be an excellent opportunity to increase awareness and support for the European Citizens’ Initiative on UBI. Scroll down for details and add your own event!
For all those who can’t wait, now would be a perfect time to (re-)watch some editions of our inspiring Basic Income Tea online talk series. In June, we discussed with Jonny Douglas (UBI Lab Network), Julio Linares (Basic Income Research & Action Lab) and Jitka Cardova (UBIE Pilots Working Group) about the power and potential of basic income pilots on a local level.

| Citizens still don’t know their rights to influence EU politics |

| With a level of awareness of 2.4%, the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) as an instrument of political codetermination in the European Union is almost unknown among the population, according to a representative YouGov survey in Germany, Italy, Finland and Portugal.
A European alliance of 18 European Citizens’ Initiatives – including the ECI “Start Unconditional Basic Incomes throughout the EU” – and other civil society organisations therefore calls for the official extension of Europe Day to “EU Sign Day” in order to strengthen citizens’ participation in European Union policies.

| UBI for the Future of Europe To spread and empower the idea of UBI in the ongoing “Conference on the Future of Europe”, the ECI has been added to the online discussion platform. You can endorse and follow the topic there and read more on the background in this letter.
