The Show Gives Back

Show staffers Sara Dumford and Jane Bremmer went to the Medical College of Wisconsin recently to present the Show donation check to Dr. Carol Williams, who is doing groundbreaking breast cancer research.

A portion of the proceeds from the 2017 Meet the Teachers reception entry fee will go to the Medical College of Wisconsin next year.

Instructor Spotlight: Ellen Solomons

We asked 2017 instructor a few questions about her work. Here are her answers!

How do you keep your work space organized?
They say that a messy work space is the sign of a creative mind. I must be a genius! I do clean it up here and there but it just insists on remaining like this. Actually I do most of my bead work in the bedroom where the tv is. The only time I get complaints (from my husband and dog Zoe) is when I loose my needle. We have all come to terms with waking up with beads stuck to our faces.

What are you most excited about in jewelry making right now?
Color and texture are the most integral parts of any work I do. I call all my work "out of the box thinking." I'm not good at following rules and find some mistakes can make the best design elements.

Where do you find your inspiration for jewelry?
When working on my dolls I find that they dictate where designs are going. Each time I sculpt a new face the body just follows. The same applies to my jewelry, only it's a bead or a design idea that starts the work. I wish I could say that I know where each section of work comes from, or that I map every step out! But there would not be any beautiful and exciting surprises and no freedom for the beads to shine.

Share two tips for students to get the most out of your class.
I tell every student that they are the artist. They are the designer and no mistake is bad. Mistakes can be new, inventive ways to combine beads and design components. I try to give each student the support they need to express and bead their ideas. All students have their own individual color sense and they should never second guess it. Their work is always a masterpiece to be admired.
