Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Chris Wallace

Fox News' Chris Wallace is today's winner for being a stalwart voice of reason.

Former President Donald Trump has been keeping himself busy pushing the big lie about the 2020 election, and this past week there’s been reporting that he has been talking to people about this ludicrous idea he could be reinstated (which is not how this works).

Wallace asked Trump ally and former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski about this, and Lewandowski said in his dozens of talks with Trump in the past few months he has “never” heard this come up.

He went on to talk about “election integrity matters that we need to deal with,” but when he made a comment knocking “the response from the media,” Wallace pushed back.

And he brought the receipts. Watch here.

MEDIA LOSER:
Brit Hume

Fox News takes both the Winner and Loser spot for Monday, and Brit Hume has unfortunately tweeted himself into the "L" column.

The news that Alameda County, California removed approximately 400 deaths from its Covid death tally to better match state guidelines brought a flood of tweets, with many playing fast and loose with the facts (not that we're expecting scientific rigor in 280 characters or less, but still).

Alex Berenson (who has a well-earned reputation for baseless fearmongering) claimed the revised Alameda numbers were "in line" with his "estimate of overcounting nationally," and Hume retweeted that with his own comment that the “overcounting fed the panic that produced the lockdowns, school closings and other regrettable decisions.”

Twitter pounced on Hume's tweet for “relying on a false claim from a chronic liar," and then some.

The A-Block

Manchin-mania

Swing votes have a lot of power when control of the Senate is split 50/50, and as Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) knows all too well, that makes them targets.

The Democrat has managed to repeatedly win re-election in a deep red state (Trump won WV in 2020 with 68.9% of the vote to President Joe Biden's 29.7%) but Manchin has found himself in the crosshairs of the more progressive wing of his party, frustrated that Senate Republicans have been able to use the filibuster to block some of Biden's agenda.

Manchin seems to be holding steady despite the glare of the media spotlight, expressing optimism about having another vote for a Jan. 6 commission and writing an op-ed opposing a Democrat-backed voting rights bill. He's been a familiar face on the cable news circuit, tirelessly advocating for bipartisan cooperation

Unsurprisingly, Manchin has drawn some public rebukes from his side of the aisle, including from other Democratic members of Congress and DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison

The View's Meghan McCain had a different take, wondering why Democrats were so anxious to force one of their members to "bend the knee" like Republicans did for Trump

The other football

Only 82 days until college football starts (not that we're counting) but in the meantime, people are playing that other kind of football, and it got a bit nutty this weekend.

A soccer match between the United States and Mexico Sunday had a lot of drama -- on and off the pitch.

Mexico's fans were so unruly during the game that referees paused the play.

The end of the game inspired even more belligerence, as the USMNT pulled off a dramatic victory behind a penalty kick goal from Christian Pulisic, and fans of Mexico began throwing objects at US players.

Check out the wild scene here.
