The worker was carrying out maintenance work on a packer closing station when the 800-kilogram machine became unbalanced and tipped backwards. His left hand was trapped and the little finger was severed. HSE's investigation found the company had failed to safely manage the risks of people performing maintenance at its factory. Machinery safety is essential to minimise harm and prevent accidents. Employers should consider how their workers use machinery, manage any risks effectively and have adequate maintenance arrangements in place to ensure it remains safe to use. HSE runs a series of courses to help you understand and control the risks associated with working with machinery. These courses are being held at HSE's Science and Research centre in Buxton but will also be available to attend live online later in the year.
