Good morning from Paris. Today, France's far-right National Rally (RN) is preparing to back a motion of no confidence against Michel Barnier’s government, a move that may please their voters but also poses challenges for the party's future. Analysts told Euractiv’s Laurent Geslin in Paris that RN is entering a “risky” game that may upset business leaders who supported them in the previous elections. Others project a clash of two different approaches within the party: a more liberal one represented by Jordan Bardella and a more radical one represented by Marine Le Pen. The latter has been mired in the legal fallout from her party's European Parliament assistants scandal, which could leave her facing five years of ineligibility for public office with immediate effect and a possible prison term. Creating chaos in French politics now may serve Le Pen’s reactive strategy. On the other hand, Bardela has, in recent weeks, been trying to leverage his growing popularity by promoting his first book nationwide. “She is terrified that Jordan Bardella might emerge as a viable alternative for the 2027 presidential election […] We are heading for a war of chiefs, and it will be merciless”, analyst Luc Rouban commented. |
