Friars Face Educational Challenges in Jamaica due to COVID-19 If you've ever been frustrated by slow internet service, you will no doubt understand the plight of Franciscan friars Fr. Jim Bok, OFM, and Fr. Colin King, OFM, in our Jamaican missions. Slow and shoddy internet is one hurdle our friars face on a daily basis in Jamaica, but when the newfound challenges of the coronavirus pandemic were added, the challenges became almost insurmountable. Recently the Jamaican Ministry of Education made the decision to switch from in-person classes to virtual learning. Upon hearing the news, Fr. Jim took a deep breath and exclaimed, “It ain’t gonna work!” How can virtual learning work with sub-standard internet or people’s inability to afford it? How will families in remote areas with no electricity even access the internet?
