April 11, 2021  As rainforests burn and ice sheets melt, a growing number of world leaders, including Pope Francis and Emmanuel Macron, want to create a new international crime: "ecocide." Under the proposal, widespread destruction of the environment would join four other crimes prosecuted in the International Criminal Court — genocide and crimes against humanity among them.
The goal is to prevent further damage to the planet and to hold companies and governments accountable. It would draw a "moral line," said Jojo Mehta, who co-founded the Stop Ecocide campaign, and "will make a difference to the people that are financing what is going on."
