From Farmers to CEOs, Leaders Are Needed to Move Sustainability Goals Forward

This week, I’m thinking about a quote from our sixth President, John Quincy Adams:

"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader."

The widening trust gap between the people who grow our food and the people who eat it demands a new level of leadership. At Trust in Food™, we’re fortunate to be surrounded by people answering the call. Certis Biologicals’ CEO Amy O’Shea, one of America’s Conservation Ag Movement newest supporting partners, is just such a person, and my colleague Nate Birt shares his conversation with her on our website.

A different – but no less important – type of leadership can be seen in the many farmer peer groups springing up across the country. Community by community, we see producers stepping forward to share their experiences with others, not because they have all the answers, but because they know there are important questions to ask about balancing ecological and economic realities.

From the boardroom to the field, leadership in climate-smart, regenerative agriculture is blazing new trails. What’s your leadership story? I’d love to hear it, please share it with me at acole@farmjournal.com.

Yours in Regenerative Ag,
Amy Skoczlas Cole

News We’re Following

Where Is Biden’s Climate Change ‘Revolution’? (via NYTimes.com)

Shared by Nate Birt, vice president, Trust In Food: In a hand-wringing overview of perceived climate-related policy inaction in Washington, columnist Spencer Bokat-Lindell surveys activities of the White House and Congress over the past seven months. The conclusion? Everything is going to hot in a handbasket. But what this piece misses is adequate context about the many other stakeholders beyond D.C. working proactively to address climate change -- and the fact that across agencies of government, scientists are taking this seriously and committed to the cause of natural resource stewardship, including on-farm practices that can sequester carbon and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It's good to be concerned, but even better to be properly informed. And there's a lot of good underway that can make a difference, starting on farms and ranches.

Connecting Ranchers with Land Stewards Could Be Key to Less Disastrous Wildfires (via CivilEats.com)

Shared by Drew Slattery, human dimensions of change lead, Trust In Food: An innovative online matchmaking platform is linking landowners to contract grazers who bring in cattle, goats, and sheep to help manage wildfire fuel loads - creating defensible space and reducing fire risks.
