View in browser JUNE 28, 2019 On the day after the first 2020 Democratic debate, candidates flooded the airwaves, doubling down on the positions they took — and doing damage control.
After a breakout performance on Night 2, Sen. Kamala Harris appeared on MSNBC to talk about both her policies, and her attacks on former VP Joe Biden.
Harris was one of two candidates who raised their hands when asked at Thursday night's debate if they would get rid of private health insurance, but the senator said Friday she'd misunderstood the question.
"No," Harris told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" when asked if she'd work to abolish private health insurance in favor of "Medicare for All" if elected president.
"Medicare for All — in my vision of Medicare for All, it includes private insurance where people can have supplemental insurance," she told NBC's Vaughn Hillyard after the debate.
About former VP Joe Biden, Harris said that while “of course” you have to work with politicians across the aisle to pass legislation, Biden’s previous comments referring to his work with segregationists was “hurtful.”
“There are no segregationists in the United States Senate today, thank God. I think that at some point you have to draw the line,” Harris said.
Biden, on the other hand, spent his day on defense, trying to clarify his position on enforcing school desegregation.
"I'd like to say something about the debate we had last night, and I heard and I listened to, and I respect, Senator Harris," Biden said at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition convention in Chicago. "But we all know that 30 seconds to 60 seconds on a campaign debate exchange cannot do justice to a lifetime committed to civil rights."
While in Japan at the G-20, President Trump made an extraordinary public offer to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, inviting him via tweet to shake hands “and say hello” in the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea.
Trump said the invite followed a "very beautiful birthday card" that Kim had sent him and a return letter that Trump had sent to Kim in Pyongyang.
"If he's there, we'll see each other for two minutes. That's all we can," Trump said.

Opinion OPINION. Democrats say they want to beat Trump in 2020. The debates suggest differently. There are millions of voters who are horrified by Trump and open to voting for a reasonable Democratic alternative — but not for a party that ignores or scares them. OPINION. World Cup star Megan Rapinoe is the definition of patriotism — Trump should take notes. Rapinoe and the U.S. women’s national team are exactly the type of athletes who should be celebrated by the White House, whether or not they win in France.
