Greetings from Atlanta, site of Saturday's SEC Championship Game between LSU and Georgia. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. CST at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on CBS as the No. 14-ranked Tigers (9-3) take on No. 1 Georgia (12-0). "Don't panic." For science fiction geeks like me, those are two words made famous by the classic book/radio show/series/movies(s), "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." Those are two words that work well in football, too. LSU is a biiiiiiiiig underdog: 17.5 points. In fact, the Tigers are the third-biggest underdog in the 30-year histrory of the SEC Championship Game. The LSU mantra that got them here will help them deal with being on the short end of such a massive point spread. And help them believe they can pull the most remarkable upset in SEC Championship Game history. Of course, it isn't just LSU playing on Championship Weekend. Southern and Tulane are aslo playing for the title in their respective conferences: the SWAC and the AAC. Our Rod Walker celebrates what a unique moment this is for Louisiana football. My column for game day is about how LSU can believe it can spring the upset. All it takes is one. Here's the rest of our SEC Championship weekend coverage on, as they used to say here in Atlanta on CNN's old "Sports Tonight" show, a hard roll: Five LSU players who need to come up big for the Tigers on SaturdayGeorgia players to watch against the TigersFour keys to an LSU victory on SaturdayInside the betting line on the Tigers-Bulldogs matchupTwo more LSU stories before we get in some down time before starting our Saturday with the USA-Netherlands match in the World Cup: The LSU men's basketball team outlasted Texas-Arlington on Friday night with a late rally for a 63-59 victory. And congratulations to the LSU volleyball team, which took down No. 8 Hawaii at Stanford for its first NCAA Tournament victory since 2014. Enjoy Championship Saturday, everyone. And be sure to hang out with us at TheAdvocate.com during the game for news updates and observations throughout. Scott Rabalais |
