EARLY DETECTION AND DIAGNOSIS NEWSLETTER Hi Voornaam, Summer is now over, and we hope you are looking ahead to the coming months with renewed energy after enjoying some sunny time.
September has already been off to a busy start with the first workshop of our Cancer Data Driven Detection (CD3) initiative taking place on 11 September. Over 80 delegates took part in an intense day of discussions about the opportunities and challenges for harnessing different data sources for early detection of cancer, to help shape the direction of the project going forward.
Our global early career researcher community have also been working hard at the ACED summer school, learning about biomarker validation strategies and developing their own. Thank you to all the excellent speakers for this event and to the delegates for attending, we hope you will find it valuable to reflect upon in your careers.
It is almost time for the Early Detection of Cancer Conference 2023, which promises to be the largest and most exciting event yet. Due to unprecedented demand, we are completely sold out and registrations are now closed.
Kind regards, David Crosby Head of Prevention and Early Detection Research Cancer Research UK |

LANDSCAPING, BRAINSTORMING AND SHARING PERSPECTIVES AT THE FIRST CD3 WORKSHOP We held our first Cancer Data Driven Detection (CD3) workshop on 11 September in London. This workshop was the first step towards building the multidisciplinary research community that will deliver CD3, bringing together leading experts in cancer risk, epidemiology, multi-omics, early detection, prevention, health informatics, data science and evidence-based implementation sciences.
We saw conversations on the current health and administrative data landscapes and the available infrastructure, technologies and analytics to support the CD3 effort. Professor Antonis Antoniou sought feedback on his vision for CD3, which he’ll now work to incorporate.
There will be more engagement exercises for CD3 in November and January, and we will soon open expressions of interest for a CD3 Chief Data Officer and a CD3 Chief Medical Officer. If you are interested in one of these roles or would like to hear more about how to get involved, please reach out to us. |

EARLY DETECTION OF CANCER CONFERENCE GETTING READY TO OPEN ITS DOORS Explore our exciting agenda for the 2023 Early Detection of Cancer Conference, which will take place in London from 10-12 October.
This year’s topics will focus on inequalities in cancer detection and diagnosis, risk stratification to inform early detection, understanding pre-cancers to enable early detection and multicancer early detection beyond ctDNA. The conference will feature engaging discussions, lightning talks from submitted abstracts and opportunities to network with experts from across the globe. The ‘Great Debates’ will also return with speakers going head-to-head to debate provocative early detection challenges.
Registration is now closed for the conference. |

| EARLY CAREER RESEARCHERS DEVISE BIOMARKER VALIDATION STRATEGIES AT ACED SUMMER SCHOOL This years’ virtual International Alliance for Cancer Early Detection (ACED) Summer School saw PhD students, healthcare professionals and early career researchers of all stages come together to tackle the complex challenges around biomarker validation.
Attendees heard from experts across multiple disciplines on the science of validating early detection tests, differences between predictive or diagnostic tests, evaluating their clinical utility, and the study designs for various stages along the translational pathway, supported by case studies from successfully developed tests. They then worked in teams to develop their own biomarker validation strategies and presented them on the final day.
If you’re interested in future events, discover more about ACED and get in touch with us. |

| USING GENERATIVE AI TOOLS IN RESEARCH We’ve agreed a joint statement with other UK funders around the use of generative AI tools in funding applications.
We expect any researchers using generative AI tools in their funding applications to act responsibly and transparently. And to protect confidentiality and research integrity, peer reviewers won’t be permitted to use generative AI tools in any way during the peer review or critique process.
We’ve also published some general guidance for researchers around the responsible use of these tools. |

LAURA DANIELSON ON CHILDREN’S AND YOUNG PEOPLE’S CANCER RESEARCH In That Cancer Conversation: One to One, Laura Danielson talks about how her experiences have shaped her role as research lead for children’s and young people’s cancer.
After a PhD and postdoc in New York, Laura bought a 1-way ticket to the UK to do a Cancer Research UK-funded postdoc in Louis Chesler’s lab in the ICR. While working on therapies for high-risk neuroblastoma, Laura was increasingly drawn to translating her skills and passion. Her first role after the lab was in science communications, followed by the strategy role she has now, in which she's working to reduce the barriers and drive progress in children's and young people’s research. |
