Good morning. We're experimenting with a different format today while our email service provider works on a technical issue. Thanks for your patience. We expect Forwarding the News to return later this week.

New this morning

  • On campus: Barnard College, an affiliate of Columbia University, expelled two seniors in their final semester for disrupting a History of Modern Israel class last month. The students reportedly chanted “Free Palestine,” and handed out posters featuring the slogan “CRUSH ZIONISM” alongside an image of a boot stomping on a Star of David.

  • In Israel: President Donald Trump may be softening his stance to “take over” Gaza, saying he would “recommend” the idea, but “not forcing” it. Several Arab states roundly rejected the plan to depopulate Gaza … Israel postponed the exchange of more than 600 Palestinian prisoners, citing, among other things, the “humiliating ceremonies” Hamas was staging when it returned the Israeli hostages ... Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff will head to the region this week for ceasefire negotiations.

  • Looking ahead: Today marks three years since Russia invaded Ukraine. At the outset of the war, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is Jewish, was called a “modern Maccabee.”... The jury trial is set to start today for the man charged with killing seven and injuring dozens more at the 2022 July 4th parade in the heavily Jewish neighborhood of Highland Park, Illinois ... Shiri, Ariel and Kfir Bibas will be buried in a closed ceremony on Wednesday. The public is being asked to line the funeral route.

And now news, features, and opinion to start the day...
