BERLIN – In his maiden speech as chancellor, Friedrich Merz pledged to “make all financial resources available” to turn Germany’s military into Europe’s most powerful army.

"Strength deters aggression; weakness invites aggression," Merz told lawmakers at the Bundestag, the lower house of Germany's parliament, on Wednesday.

Germany must take more responsibility for the continent's defence amid growing threats from Russia, he added.
