Castles, are you a fan? Well, even if you’re only re-moat-ley interested in them, you absolutely need to tick Windsor Castle off the list. It’s both the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. This stone fortress has been around for nearly 1,000 years, and was built by William the Conqueror not long after he invaded and then became King of England in the eleventh century. These days, The Queen herself spends much of her time at the castle.
You may not bump into her there, but you will be able to wander around the rooms where she has welcomed and entertained visitors including Heads of State from across the globe. There are plenty of precious objects, paintings and more to gaze at. A highlight is the armour of Henry VIII (the one with the wives) which was adapted during his lifetime as his waist got bigger and bigger!
At weekends throughout the summer, including the bank holiday, the East Terrace Garden will be open to the public for only the second time in 40 years and it’ll be the base for garden-themed family activities. Once you’ve finished exploring, why not cool off with a Windsor Castle ice cream in the medieval Undercroft Café. |
