Dear John, I am a big believer in setting and achieving goals. However, as much as I like setting and achieving goals, I love identifying and solving problems. There is great satisfaction in completing the “to-do” list! Here is a mind shift for you. My friend Bob Tiede explained to me that about 20% of people are goal oriented while 80% are problem oriented. Eighty percent are naturally bent toward solving problems. How about you? Would you rather solve a big problem in your life or achieve a big goal? Good news! It is not negative to identify a problem. In fact, you have to identify the problem before you can solve it. Once you identify the problem, then you get solution focused. Being solution focused is positive! At Ziglar, we teach a seven-step goals setting system. If you are among the 80% who like solving problems more than achieving goals, I want you to think of it as a seven-step problem solving system. Here are the seven steps: #1. Identify the goal (problem) #2. My benefits to reaching this goal (solving this problem) #3. Major obstacles and mountains to climb to reach this goal (solve this problem) #4. Skills or knowledge required to reach this goal (solve this problem) $5. Individuals, groups, companies to work with to achieve this goal (solve this problem) #6. Plan of action to reach this goal (solve this problem - the to-do list!) #7. Completion date of this goal (solution) A simple example. Goal: “I enjoy weighing 189 pounds on September 1, 2018” Problem: “I need to lose 10 lbs by September 1, 2018” Here is the key - get solution focused which is always positive! Choose to Win! Tom P.S.
